SBTRKT is a stage name that allows the man behind it, Aaron Jerome, to produce his music somewhat anonymously. His identity is covered by a futuristic re-design of a ‘native society ceremonial mask’. This modern aesthetic to SBTRKT continues…
… His songs are bass heavy as they drift around some R&B, House and Dubstep genres. However, the overall simplicity to the style of music causes the so-called dubstep to still be enjoyable without hurting your ears (as dubstep can sometimes do!).
Minimalistic sounds and styles are something I come across a lot with modern producers, yet SBTRKT has found a way of making dubstep – a genre of layers and layers of different instrumentation, to create a large overall composition – to sound much more simple and upbeat in its own way.
To compliment the calming futuristic-funk sounds, ‘New Dorp. New York’ (which features Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend) has a pretty awesome animated video too!
