City High was an American rap/hip hop trio, consisting of Ryan Toby, Robbie Pardlo and Claudette Ortiz.
This was undoubtedly their most well-known song and my word was it an amazing track! Not only did it reach Number 3 in the UK charts, back in 2001, but British band Bastille recorded and released a cover of the song in 2013 (also featured below).
The song’s lyrical and video content confronts the idea that some single mothers, facing poverty, are forced into prostitution to support their children; it is intended as a motivational anthem and in an odd way, it does the job! It also features a sample of Dr. Dre‘s hit song, ‘The Next Episode’.
What a massive anthem! Are you still loving this song as much now as you were 14 years ago? Please leave your #ThrowbackThursday songs in a comment below or on our Facebook/Twitter accounts.
