#FeelGoodFriday: Gorillaz – ‘DARE’

Gorillaz are an English-formed band, created by Damon Albarn (from Blur) and artist Jamie Hewlett, who created the characters of the virtual band. The band consists of four animated and heavily characterised members; 2-D (lead vocals and keyboard), Murdoc (bass guitar), Noodle (guitar, keyboard) and Russel (drums and percussion.)

These characters are entirely fictional and relate to the members of the band in no way; they are unique and alive in their own fictional universe.

In their time, the band have released five studio albums, one remix album, three compilation albums and 16 singles.

‘Dare’ is from the album Demon Days, which was released back in 2005. The song is predominantly sung by the character of Noodle, with vocals provided by the singer Rosie Wilson and backing vocals from both Damon Albarn and Shaun Ryder. From the electronic synths and sounds to the distinguishable drum beats, this song will make you want to get up and dance… but maybe not as vivaciously as Noodle in the music video!

The music video for this song features an appearance by Shaun Ryder from the bands Happy Mondays and Black Grape; he takes up the role of the giant disembodied head, who Noodle is keeping alive by the use of various machinery. Noodle largely takes the spotlight in this video, by dancing around and singing to the camera. However, the other characters can be seen appearing in short cameos, such as 2-D listening to what is happening by pressing his ear to the floor. The music video also nods towards classic horror movies which can be seen at the start of the video, where a “reject false icons” statue can be spotted depicting Pazuzu, the figurine from The Exorcist. Crows can also be seen flying around the area which is a tribute to The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock. There are many other cameos dotted about…see if you can work out more!

Crazy Town are an American rock/rap band who were formed in 1995 by Bret Mazur and Seth Binzer. ‘Butterfly’ is the band’s best known single, which reached Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts in 2000, which in turn prompted the release of their debut album, The Gift of Game, that went on to sell over 1.5 million units.

The guitar melody which opens the song is a head-bopping, body-swaying beat that is followed up by a high hat, drum beat and of course vocals.  Even though the lyrics could be argued to be rather simplistic; “Come, my lady. Come, come, my lady. You’re my butterfly. Sugar. Baby.” There is no denying that ‘Butterfly’ is an extremely catchy, throwback tune.

The music video for the song was directed by the team who worked on the well-known movie, The Matrix as well as What Dreams May Come. The video depicts the band in a fantasy, make-believe forest surrounded by butterflies. The fantasy, magical vibe continues as Shifty’s star tattoo flies off into the air, as well as two women sporting butterfly wings, walking around in the forest.

#WildCardWednesday: Bexey – ‘Suitcase’

Bexey Swan is currently an unsigned British rapper, who was born August 3rd 1996. Bexey‘s previous stage name was Zehtroid Vzn, before he changed it to his current cognomen.

The rapper posts the majority of his music on his SoundCloud account, where he is close to 20k followers.

Some of his most popular songs include ‘Suitcase’ as well as ‘MYTH KILLA’ and ‘YOUNG HEARTBREAKER.’ Before the tragic and unpredicted passing of rapper Lil Peep, the two were close friends and posted frequent collaborations as well as Bexey supporting Peep on his most recent European tour.

In the song ‘Suitcase’, Bexey paints the picture of the struggles and challenges his fast-paced tour and music producing life can present to him. He also talks about how he has grown as a musician, when people doubted him.

“My boy’s ain’t slept in like two days, no way, it’s too late. Life feeling like a movie.”‘Suitcase’, Bexey

The sombre, slightly melancholy vibe of this song is emphasised by his somewhat robotic, synthesised voice. The deep, repetitive beat paired with the guitar gives the track a slow, steady pace which reflects the lyrics where Bexey sings about his lack of sleep, due to the rhythm of his schedule.

What do you think of this unsigned rapper’s honest tune? Have you got anything similar to recommend? Or do you have something of a different genre to recommend us? Use the hashtag, #WildCardWednesday or hit us up via our socials.

Marshmallow x Lil Peep – ‘Spotlight’

Electronic dance music producer Marshmello has released a new song titled ‘Spotlight’, featuring vocals from the recently deceased rapper and singer, Lil Peep, who passed away late last year (2017). The pair had been previously working on the track before the rapper passed.

Marshmello has previously done music collaborations with Omar LinX and Ookay, as well as remixing popular songs by Jack Ü and Zedd. His song ‘Alone’, made it onto the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 2017.

“Gus will live forever through his music and that is something we should all be extremely thankful for.” – Marshmello

This song oozes a rap-grunge vibe with Lil Peep admitting his feelings for someone, accompanied by dark chords. The use of light guitar riffs, paired with the melancholy dark vibe of the beat is a sweet juxtaposition, which is extremely satisfying to listen to. Although there is no official music video with either of the individuals in it, so to speak, the image of Peep with a flickering spotlight on him, is haunting yet also artistic. Paying homage to the rapper in this way, regarding the song’s cover art, in my opinion, is a nice gesture.

Cadell – ‘Create A Career’

Rapper Cadell, is a UK Grime MC from Bow located in East London who was born 17 January 1997. His first mixtape was released back in 2016, titled Hotline, as well as his first debut album, 3 Is The New 6. The rapper is most commonly known for being the younger brother of one of the “godfathers” of grime; Wiley.

‘Create A Career’ (which was originally titled ‘Do It’) is currently his most listened to song on his Spotify reaching over 36,000 listens, with the album it is featured on, L.O.N.D.O.N (Lots Of N****s Don’t Observe Nature), being released at the start of this year (2018).

The song opens with a slightly electronica feel to it and jumping, jittering vocals which are swiftly followed up with a deep bass line. The lyrics are used as a tool for the rapper as he expresses his thoughts and feelings about the growth of his career. The fast-paced rhythm, accompanied with the continual bass and synth backing, makes for a great blood-pumping grime tune.

#MellowMonday: Petit Biscuit – ‘Sunset Lover’

Petit Biscuit (less frequently known by his real name of Mehdi Benjelloun) is a French DJ and music producer, born November 10th 1999.

His song, ‘Sunset Lover’, was released in 2015 onto the music platform Soundcloud, when he was at the young age of 15. The song has been stripped back in terms of style compared to the mainstream electronica music which you frequently hear in the charts. What we are left with, is a melody that includes a simplistic yet heavily relaxing guitar line, single short notes, a basic kick drum, occasional clapping and strange yet intriguing vocals, which could be seen to mimic an infant sounding out words for the first time.

The song has now reached over 180 million streams on Soundcloud and Spotify combined, as well as it reaching No. 13 on the Hot/Dance/Electronic song chart. It can be found on his newest album titled Presence, which was released last year (2017).

“Sunset Lover is more about the chorus and verse, even if there aren’t lyrics”Petit Biscuit

I personally find that the creative rhythm, melodic presence and unique style of this song is calming, relaxing and thought provoking. I frequently listen to Petit’s music while studying or occasionally when trying to sleep in the evenings after a particularly stressful day.
