I can’t believe it’s been 20 years already, since blink-182 first released their massive hit single, ‘What’s My Age Again?’ from their hugely successful album, Enema of the State.

Without a doubt, the trio have firmly embedded this as a punk rock classic that is sure to stay a firm fan favourite for years to come.

2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the single and album and although Tom DeLonge is currently not a member of the band, the members still publicly show support for each other’s projects and are celebrating the release with a tour and the addition of singer, Matt Skiba.

Not only are the lyrics witty but the music video is possibly one of the most hilarious and iconic ones of its time. I don’t think many people can have missed this…mainly due to the band’s hilarious nakedness running down the street, but in case you have somehow managed not to see it, check it out below!

#ThrowbackThursday: Lenny Kravitz – ‘Fly Away’

Lenny Kravitz is well-known for his retro vibes and fusion of various genres, from rock to reggae, folk to funk and soul to psychedelic.

Back in 1998, Kravitz released ‘Fly Away’, one of his most successful singles to date, reaching Number 1 in the UK Charts.

The song was in fact the fourth single to be taken from his fifth album, 5, and due to the huge success of it, not only boosted sales of the album but also earned him a Grammy Award in 1999 for Best Male Rock Performance.

The track is incredibly catchy with its funk bass line and gritty vocals – it’s no wonder it rocketed to the top of the charts.

The music video was directed by Paul Hunter (Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and more) and features Kravitz and his band performing in a club, surrounded by a crowd, dancing and getting frisky. It’s a very iconic video for the artist and shows a real passion in his performance…something he definitely pours into his live shows!

What are your thoughts of this wonderfully unique artist? Did you love this track first time around? Do you still love it now? What’s your favourite Lenny Kravitz track? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#ThrowbackThursday: Crazy Town – ‘Butterfly’

Crazy Town are an American rock/rap band who were formed in 1995 by Bret Mazur and Seth Binzer. ‘Butterfly’ is the band’s best known single, which reached Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts in 2000, which in turn prompted the release of their debut album, The Gift of Game, that went on to sell over 1.5 million units.

The guitar melody which opens the song is a head-bopping, body-swaying beat that is followed up by a high hat, drum beat and of course vocals.  Even though the lyrics could be argued to be rather simplistic; “Come, my lady. Come, come, my lady. You’re my butterfly. Sugar. Baby.” There is no denying that ‘Butterfly’ is an extremely catchy, throwback tune.

The music video for the song was directed by the team who worked on the well-known movie, The Matrix as well as What Dreams May Come. The video depicts the band in a fantasy, make-believe forest surrounded by butterflies. The fantasy, magical vibe continues as Shifty’s star tattoo flies off into the air, as well as two women sporting butterfly wings, walking around in the forest.

It was back in 1999 that dance duo Phats & Small released their single, ‘Turn Around’, which features  samples of Toney Lee‘s ‘Reach Up’ and Change‘s ‘The Glow of Love’. It also featured the vocals of  British-Nigerian singer Ben Ofoedu.

The song rocketed to Number 2 in the UK charts and the music video was shot in our very own city of Brighton. It’s easy to see why the song was so popular, as it’s just so damn catchy and uplifting!

Who remembers this song? Did you party to it, like it was…erm…1999? Please leave a comment or your own #ThrowbackThursday suggestions in a comment below or via our social media accounts.

#ThrowbackThursday: True Steppers – ‘Out Of Your Mind’ featuring Dane Bowers & Victoria Beckham

True Steppers Banner

True Steppers were a UK Garage duo from 1999-2000, consisting of Jonny Lisners and Andy Lysandrou. The pair had success in April 2000 with the release of Buggin’, a collaboration with Dane Bowers which reached Number 6 in the charts.

It was then in August 2000, they once again teamed up with Bowers but were also joined by Victoria Beckham, for the massive tune which was ‘Out Of Your Mind’. The song was their biggest hit, reaching Number 2 in the charts, but their follow-up singles and album failed to chart highly.

#ThrowbackThursday: Five – Keep On Movin’

Five Banner

Five (sometimes stylised as five) were a massive boyband back in the late 90s to early 00s, consisting of five members; Scott Robinson, Abs (now Abz Love), Sean ConlonJason “J” Brown and Ritchie Neville. Since then, the five-piece band were featured in the first series of ITV’s, The Big Reunion, however only managed to reunite as a quartet (without J)…however, most recently, the band lost another member, Abz Love, so remain as a trio. It has to be said though, they are doing a great job and have been touring the country to sold-out crowds, despite their loss of two members!

The band were originally signed and managed by Simon Cowell and had a huge string of hits and sold-out arena tours.

Keep On Movin’ is possibly one of their most well-known and loved hits, scoring a UK Number 1 when it was released back in 1999. Even now, 16 years on, it remains a timeless pop classic!

I personally LOVE this song…it is a go-to track for me, any time I feel a bit down and want cheering up. It has the quality of making instant happiness; it’s no wonder it was such a massive success!

Who remembers this song? Did you love it back in 1999? Still loving it now? Did you see the band on their recent tour/Big Reunion Tour?

#ThrowbackThursday: Bomfunk MCs – ‘Freestyler’

Bomfunk MCs Banner

This song is AMAZING! I remember when this came out back in 2000; my first year of secondary school! It’s blend of electronica, hip hop and drum & bass was so unique for its time and the reason this track has longevity!

The song’s iconic “whale-like sounds” really made it stand out and the video was quirky and cool too. The song charted at Number 2 in the UK and I even remember buying their album, just for this song!

Bomfunk MCs were a Finnish breakbeat hip hop group comprised of several members throughout their time, but fronted by Raymond Ebanks AKA B. O. Dubb. The group actually had 3 albums but only their first, In Stereo, found mild success in the UK.

Anyway, this song is to be pumped loudly and enjoyed to its fullest…live it up like it’s Y2K again!

Who else remembers this song?! Were you a fan of it?! Please share this post and reply below with your ‘Throwback Thursday’ song for the week.
