#ThrowbackThursday: B*Witched – ‘C’est La Vie’

B*Witched are an Irish quartet, consisting of twins, Edele and Keavy Lynch, Lindsay Armaou and Sinéad O’Carroll, who burst onto the scene with their debut single, ‘C’est La Vie’, back in 1998.

The song was such a huge success with its unique brand of upbeat, Irish-themed pop and peaked at Number 1 in the UK Charts. The track was filled with a series of double entendres and in 2013, the girl group revealed that it was in fact about sex.

This song kicked off a hugely successful (albeit relatively short) career, with their next three singles all peaking at Number 1 in the UK Charts, and both their albums also reached inside the Top 5!

The music video was bright, vibrant, super cheesy and downright fun, featuring the girls’ iconic denim-on-denim style, which became a signature part of their branding.

What are your thoughts of this pop quartet’s Irish-flavoured, Number 1 hit? Did you love it first time around? Are you still a fan today? Got a #ThrowbackThursday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#ThrowbackThursday: Fatboy Slim – ‘The Rockafeller Skank’

Fatboy Slim (aka Norman Cook) is known for his incredible and creative use of samples to craft his tracks and this year sees his 1998, big beat smash hit, ‘The Rockafeller Skank’ (taken from the huge album, You’ve Come A Long Way Baby) turn 20…and it’s still as awesome as it was back then!

This particular track features vocal samples by rapper, Lord Finesse, from the track ‘Vinyl Dog Vibe’ by Vinyl Dogs, as well as ‘Sliced Tomatoes’ by Just Brothers, The Bobby Fuller Four‘s ‘I Fought the Law’ (featuring DeWayne Quirico‘s drum intro), ‘Beat Girl’ by John Barry and a guitar hook from the song ‘Peter Gunn’ by Art of Noise featuring Duane Eddy is also sampled.

It’s incredible to think that this song is made up of all those samples, each from a completely different background but when put in this context, have created something unique and truly epic in its own right.

There’s no doubt about it; this song was a big hit for his back in 1998 but it is timeless due to its distinctive sample use and sound. This could quite easily have been released in 2018 and is still as brilliant as it ever was! An incredible track by an incredible artist!

What are your thoughts of this epic Brightonian artist’s 1998 smash hit? Still love it as much today? Got a #ThrowbackThursday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#ThrowbackThursday: Lovestation – ‘Teardrops’

2018 sees the 20th anniversary, since the release of Lovestation‘s ‘Teardrops’, which was in fact a cover of a song from Womack & Womack‘s fourth studio album, Conscience (originally released in 1988).

Unlike the original version, Lovestation‘s was composed in an early UK Garage style and went on to become the group’s biggest hit, reaching Number 14 in the UK Charts.

There have also been several other versions since this by  German pop quartet No Angels in 2007, Australian singer Kate Alexa in 2008 and then in 2009, UK pop girl group, Sugababes, recorded a version for the special Island Records album, Island Life – 50 Years of Island Records.

A quirky, black and white video was also released alongside this single, which can be seen below.

This is a fantastic track that certainly conjures up childhood memories for me and whilst it’s now 20 years old, I think there’s still something edgy and almost current about it.

#ThrowbackThursday: Michael Jackson – ‘Blood On The Dancefloor’

‘Blood On The Dancefloor’ is quite an underrated track from the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. The song was released as the first single from the remix album, Blood On The Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix.

Interestingly, Jackson and Teddy Riley actually created the track in time for the 1991 release of the album, Dangerous, however, it did not appear on the record. Instead, it was altered slightly before it found commercial release, in 1997. The track plays with a selection of genres including funk and new jack swing.

Needless to say, the track rocketed to Number 1 in the UK charts and the music video premiered on Top Of The Pops. It revolved around the main character of the track, Susie (played by Sybil Azur), seducing Jackson with a dance, before pulling a switchblade on him.

#ThrowbackThursday: The Verve – ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’

The Verve burst on to the scene many years before the release of ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ but this song further sky-rocketed the band into the limelight.

The track takes its main theme from an Andrew Loog Oldham orchestral version of The Rolling Stones‘ song ‘The Last Time’ and the orchestral sounds are massively iconic to this song. I love this song though and it really is timeless! 20 years on and it still sounds edgy, cool and somewhat current. You can’t easily define its era by sound alone.

The music video is great too, with singer, Richard Ashcroft, singing the song whilst walking down a busy London pavement, all the while, oblivious to what’s happening around him and refusing to change the pace of his stride or direction throughout.

A great track, that I still can’t get enough of today.

What are your thoughts of this track, 20 years on? Got a #ThrowbackThursday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#ThrowbackThursday: Billie Myers – ‘Kiss The Rain’

Has it been 20 years already?! Blimey! Well Billie Myers released ‘Kiss The Rain’ back in 1997 and it was actually one of the first singles I ever bought…gosh, remember CD singles?!

Considered Billie Myers‘ most notable hit, the song reached Number 4 in the UK charts and was taken from her debut album, Growing, Pains. It was also featured in TV shows like Dawson’s Creek and Crossroads and was co-written and produced with hit songwriter, Desmond Child.

Since then, Myers has had more albums, but none quite replicated the success of this single. She does however remain an active singer-songwriter and is a big mental health advocate and LGBT rights supporter.

Check out the original video for the single below too – it’s so brilliantly 90s!

What are your thoughts of this track? Remember it well? Got your own #ThrowbackThursday track from 1997 to remind us of? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via our social media.

#ThrowbackThursday: Hanson – ‘MMMBop’

20 years ago this year, Hanson burst onto the pop scene with this incredibly infectious hit, ‘MMMBop’, which hit the Number 1 spot in 27 countries around the world!

Interestingly, the song was originally recorded as a ballad, but was reworked by producers The Dust Brothers, making it into the monster success we know today.

Taken from their first commercially successful album, Middle Of Nowhere, the single launched the bands career, thrusting them into the limelight, seemingly from nowhere. 20 years on, the band are still going strong; sadly, no single has quite reached this level of success, but their followers remain dedicated and this song still remains a massive success and guilty pleasure the world over.

The music video is fun and showcases the brothers’ special bond and puts across the kind of fun-filled antics brothers of their age should get up to.

Remember this song the first time round? Still a fan? Is this a guilty pleasure of yours? Please share  your thoughts or your own #ThrowbackThursday suggestion in a comment or via our social media accounts.
