#WildCardWednesday: Vanessa Carlton – ‘Dreams’

facebook-like   Instagram

Vanessa Carlton is probably most notable for her 2002 smash hit, ‘A Thousand Miles but she is so much more than that!

With 5 studio albums now under her belt, she has certainly been busy writing and recording music and touring the world. She is also now beginning to prepare a new album. However, until then, she will begin to release one cover song a month (starting with a cover of Robyn‘s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’ in March 2018), while she continues work on her upcoming sixth album.

April 2018’s cover is the huge, classic Fleetwood Mac song, ‘Dreams’. This is a very close rendition to the original but with much more haunting vocals and instrumentals, created by the subtle reverb on Carlton’s voice and the guitars. Whilst covers tend to divide opinions and people often state that they “don’t live up to the original”, this is a superb modernisation of the track and pays a brilliant homage to the original; well done Vanessa Carlton! I can’t wait to see which cover you do next!

No music video has been released, but the audio video can be seen and heard below.

What are your thoughts of the latest cover from this incredible singer-songwriter? Got a #WildCardWednesday track or cover song to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or hit us up via our social media.

#ThrowbackThursday / #ThrowbackThreesday: Avril Lavigne – ‘Complicated’, ‘Sk8er Boi’ & ‘I’m With You’

Avril Lavigne – ‘Complicated’

Avril Lavigne first burst onto the scene with her infectious, mellow pop rock single, ‘Complicated’ back in May 2002 (15 years ago!!!) and it skyrocketed to the Top 3 spots all around the globe!

The music video was fun and saw Lavigne crashing a mall and getting up to mischief but also performing scenes in a skate park – such an iconic look for the singer.

The song was also nominated for two Grammy Awards and featured on her debut album, Let Go.

Avril Lavigne – ‘Sk8er Boi’

Then, later in 2002, Avril Lavigne released her follow-up single, and one of my favourite songs of hers, ‘Sk8er Boi’. This song was also a huge commercial success for her around the globe and also scored her a Grammy nomination in 2003.

A much more upbeat track to her debut, and far more punky, the video is equally as mischievous, if not more so; the singer sets up a guerilla performance which people flock to, causing chaos and anarchy in the streets. The police try to track her down as she smashes her guitar through a windscreen, before a police copter hovers over her. It’s such an epic video for an awesome, catchy yet punchy song. That green t-shirt and red tie combo had fan girls emulating her across the globe.

Avril Lavigne – ‘I’m With You’

Lastly, ‘I’m With You’ was the third single from her debut album and another favourite of mine. It was the first ballad Avril Lavigne released as a single and scored her yet another Grammy nomination in 2004. It’s a song that’s brimming with passion and even has hints of country to it; an epic song.

The music video sees Lavigne spend a lot of time alone, wandering the streets in search of someone. It is interspersed with party footage but all shot in slow-motion, making it look all the more spectacular.

This song just went on to cement the diversity Avril Lavigne has in her songwriting – she is just awesome. End of.

#ThrowbackThursday: Holly Valance – ‘Kiss Kiss’

Has it really been 15 years since Holly Valance released ‘Kiss Kiss’? Well at the start of May 2017, the song will be 15 years old and boy has time gone quickly for this track!

‘Kiss Kiss’ was Holly Valance‘s debut single after breaking away from her acting career in the Australian soap, Neighbours and it quickly rocketed to Number 1 in the UK charts. As a result of this, Valance had a string of hits and a couple of albums during the early 00s but since then, has been relatively quiet on the musical front, instead concentrating on being an ambassador for Disability Rights International.

What a great song and a brilliant blast from the past! Please share this post and re-live some memories 🙂

What are your thoughts of this old-school pop classic? Got a #ThrowbackThursday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#MellowMonday: Will Young – ‘What The World Needs Now Is Love’

This song came to my attention during an advert break in a programme, when the entire break was this song and its accompanying music video.

Will Young rose to fame after winning the TV show, Pop Idol, back in 2002, however he’s still going strong today.

This particular cover comes as a collaboration between Young and the WWF in an attempt to raise awareness of the charity. It’s a stirring visual experience and certainly made me take notice.

This is not only a great way to start the week off but a good way to raise awareness of WWF, which I have supported in one way or another, throughout my life.

#ThrowbackThursday / #ThrowbackThreesday: Missy Elliott

Missy Elliott Banner

This week’s #ThrowbackThursday post is a special #ThrowbackThreesday (like May’s Will Smith post).

I decided that I wanted to post a Missy Elliott track this week but couldn’t decide which one to choose; I was left with 3 epic tunes of hers to share so thought, why not share them all!

Back in 2001, Missy Elliott really broke into the UK mainstream, with her Top 5 hit, ‘Get Ur Freak On’ (taken from her 2001 album, ‘Miss E… So Addictive’). The track was produced by Timbaland and has a heavy bhangra influence, featuring spoken words in both Japanese and Hindi.

Missy Elliott – ‘Get Ur Freak On’

This track was later followed up by another Top 10 hit, in 2002, ‘Work It’ (taken from her 2002 album, ‘Under Construction’) and this song became notable for her use of backwards lyrics, an elephant sound to block out an expletive and the use of the term ‘badonkadonk’.

Also produced by Timbaland, this is a massive song by all accounts!

Missy Elliott – ‘Work It’

Finally of the three Missy Elliott tracks, is ‘Lose Control’, which was released in 2005 and the lead single from her album, ‘The Cookbook’. Missy Elliott herself produced this song and it features guest vocals from Ciara and Fatman Scoop, which really add to the song. Fatman Scoop’s shouts and Ciara’s attempts to rap, really enhance the song to perfection.

The song also features samples from Cybotron‘s ‘Clear’ and Hot Streak‘s ‘Body Work’ and produced another Top 10 hit for Missy E!

#ThrowbackThursday: The Supermen Lovers – ‘Starlight’ featuring Mani Hoffman

The Supermen Lovers Banner

This week’s #ThrowbackThursday is a bit of a one-hit wonder in terms of big releases for this artist, as this is The Supermen Lovers’ (aka Guillaume Atlan) most well-known release.

Guillaume started The Supermen Lovers project back in 2000 when he quickly wrote and recored his debut single, ‘Starlight’, with Mani Hoffman, which was released in September 2001. This song was later included on his debut album, ‘The Player’, which was released in 2002.

‘Starlight’ received positive reviews and reached Number 2 in the UK charts.

Not only was the song incredible, but the music video was pretty memorable too! Directed by French animator, Numero 6 (who also directed Super Furry Animals’ ‘It’s Not The End Of The World?’ the following year), the video sees a “potato” man writing and recording ‘Starlight’ in his bedroom before attempting to get a record contract. He meets a mouse, Mexican skeletons and aliens along the way; it’s well worth a watch!
