#ThrowbackThursday: Darren Hayes – ‘On The Verge Of Something Wonderful’

It’s been a decade since Darren Hayes released the first single from his third album (This Delicate Thing We’ve Made), ‘On The Verge Of Something Wonderful’.

It is a truly captivating song with some fantastic trademark highs in Hayes’ voice – it’s a powerful and emotive track that really stood apart from the rest of mainstream music at that time, by reigniting the 80s sound. The track (and in fact the rest of the album) was recorded with the help of a 1983 Fairlight CMI synthesizer.

It reached Number 20 in the UK charts and not only did the song have a very 80s feel to it but so did the video. The music video contains a cameo appearance by Janice Dickinson and features Darren singing in front of a series of animated backdrops – it is reminiscent of the Max Headroom TV series, certain scenes from the film Electric Dreams and the graphics of some Atari brochures from the early 80s.

#ThrowbackThursday: Paramore – ‘Misery Business’

As if Paramore‘s ‘Misery Business’ is a decade old already?! You might not believe it, but it is. This week, the track turned 10 years old.

The song was the lead single from the band’s second studio album, Riot!, and it peaked at Number 17 in the UK charts (the highest position the band received until that point). It’s an incredible, punchy, sing-along track that just makes you want to bounce around to it, wherever you are. Hayley Williams’ voice is just remarkable in it too.

The music video was fantastic too – it merged scenes of the band performing with high school clips involving a “bitch” pushing people around, hurting people and cutting off a girl’s hair, until the band give her a taste of her own medicine. It’s definitely worth a watch, so check it out below.

Do you still love this track, 10 years on? Are you still a fan of Paramore today? Have you got a different #ThrowbackThursday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or hit us up via social media.

#ThrowbackThursday: Good Charlotte – ‘The River’ featuring M. Shadows & Synyster Gates

I love Good Charlotte; always have, always will!

I cannot believe that ‘The River was released a decade ago; it’s an incredible song with a pretty wicked video too; it’s a timeless track!

The song was taken from the band’s fourth album, Good Morning Revival, and featured M. Shadows and Synyster Gates from the band Avenged Sevenfold. It’s a high-intensity track that made a huge impact on me from the very first listen – it’s got a massive energy to it. Interestingly, there are several references to the Bible throughout the song and the running time of the track is 3:16, which an intentional reference to John 3:16.

The track was also dedicated to James “The Rev” Sullivan (from Avenged Sevenfold) after his passing.

#ThrowbackThursday: We The Kings – ‘Check Yes Juliet’

2017 marks the 10th anniversary of We The Kings‘ self-titled, debut album, from which ‘Check Yes Juliet’ is one of the most successful singles.

The song is everything you could want from a power pop/pop rock/pop punk track – punchy guitars, swirling synths, beltable vocals and an epically catchy chorus. The song undoubtedly exploded the band onto the pop rock scene and it’s great that we are now celebrating their 10th anniversary with them. You can also catch them on their 10th Anniversary US tour now (BUY TICKETS HERE).

The music video is a take on William Shakespeare’s classic tale, in which lead singer Travis plays Romeo, ‘tossing rocks’ at Juliet’s window. Juliet’s parents do not approve of her relationship with her “Romeo” and demand that she stay away from him. The video ends with Juliet sneaking out to see Travis perform at a house party.

There’s no doubt about it, Avril Lavigne‘s single, ‘Girlfriend’, was (and still is) a monster of a tune! It’s shocking to think that this song was released 10 years ago, this year, but it genuinely feels timeless.

The punchy guitar riffs, in-your-face vocals and sassy lyrics are the recipe for the perfect pop rock track which is probably one of the reasons it was such a massive global success. This song was so huge upon its release that the music video held the record for the most views on YouTube, worldwide, at one point. (If for any reason you’ve lived under a rock for the past decade and haven’t seen it, check out the music video below.)

What’s more, Avril Lavigne has announced that she is hoping to release some new music this year, after some time away due to ill health; it’ll certainly be a pleasure to have her back!

What are your thoughts of this epic tune? Does it bring back memories? Have you got a different, favourite Avril Lavigne song? Please share your thoughts or own #ThrowbackThursday song in a comment below or via our social media, using the hashtag.

‘The Bird And The Worm’ was the first single to be released from The Used‘s third studio album, Lies For The Liars. The song was the band’s highest charting single at the time, reaching #9 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

This song is epic with its heavy post-hardcore guitars and Bert McCracken‘s unique vocal style. The way he uses his voice is remarkable – such a talent to be able to blend screaming vocals with singing so seamlessly.

The music video is quirky and cool too but then you’d expect nothing less from The Used.

#WildCardWednesday: Kate Nash – ‘Good Summer’

Having taken some time out of the limelight to work on writing songs for others (such as Rita Ora‘s ‘Poison’), Kate Nash is back with some new material!

Since her debut in 2007, the songstress has experimented with her sound from the more indie side of pop to the more punky, edgy sounds of the genre. However this song is much more straight-up pop, with its use of subtle synths and beautiful melodies.

It’s definitely captured our attention and I can’t wait to hear her future releases! I gather she is set to release music more frequently throughout the coming year…will this be a string of singles or a lead-up to a new full-length album? I guess only time will tell, but whatever it turns out to be, we’re excited for her return!

Are you a Kate Nash fan? Do you like this new sound? Have you got a favourite song of hers? Please leave your thoughts or own choice for #WildCardWednesday in a comment below or tell us via social media, using the hash tag and our twitter handle.

We’re half way through the week! Huzzah!
