#Review: With Confidence – Love And Loathing 🥀

Muzik Speaks Loves Hopeless Records - SmallerWith Confidence are a pop punk band from Sydney, Australia, who formed back in 2012. Having been through some line-up changes, the band now consists of Jayden Seeley (lead vocals & bass), Inigo Del Carmen (lead guitar & backing vocals) and Joshua Brozzesi (drums). In 2016, the band signed to Hopeless Records and released their debut album Better Weather. Now, in 2018, the band are back with their sophomore record, Love And Loathing. Here’s what we have to say about it…

With Confidence - Love And Loathing.jpg

This feels very much like the band have studied and followed the recipe for making the perfect pop punk record, down to a tee…and that’s not even a bad thing! Somehow, the record feels timeless within the realm of the genre but without sounding like a carbon copy of so many others. After only a couple of listens, it feels just like returning to an old favourite that has been in my collection for years!

Opening track, ‘That Something’, is a stunning way to kick off an album – it’s got catchy vocals (but not obviously so) about finding a new love interest, paired with strong instrumentals of varied tempos, topped off with superb and subtle production flourishes.

Other huge tracks to take note of, include: ‘The Turnaround’ is a massive tune about making a change in your life and grabbing it by the horns, all accompanied by seriously incredible falsetto vocals; ‘Jaded’ which is a fast-paced thrashing track that you might find from the likes of Simple Plan; ‘Better’ is probably my favourite song on the record – about the desire to improve yourself with it’s occasionally satirical lyrics and soaring high-pitched vocal melodies, it’s a track you can easily get lost in.

Diversity spans the record: ‘Spinning’ is much calmer tune that has ‘woohoos’ and the subtle catchiness of a We The Kings or Maroon 5 track; ‘Pâquerette (Without Me)’ wishes an old love well with mellow acoustic vibes and ‘Icarus’ is a far grungier and more aggressive song that bares a resemblance to something by You Me At Six – it’s got heavy guitars and screamy vocals and adds a new depth to the record.

After only a couple of listens, it feels just like returning to an old favourite that has been in my collection for years!

Even in its lower moments, this is an album that feels overall, positive and like a band that’s been revitalised. The tracks each sound unique and interesting in their own ways; some outright pop punk anthems, other mellow, heartfelt ballads and even a couple of slightly more experimental numbers…yet it all still comes together as a cohesive record. Love And Loathing is just that – a record of two halves, covering the excitement of new relationships and hatred of old ones.

It is a tight, well-produced album that, despite some recent, tumultuous events, feels like a band now set for even bigger things! Could this be the next All Time Low or 5 Seconds Of Summer? If you’re a pop punk fan, you will love every second of this record!

#Two4Tunesday: Troye Sivan – ‘Bloom’ & Jess Glynne – ‘I’ll Be There’

Troye Sivan – ‘Bloom’

Troye Sivan is South African-born, Australian singer, songwriter, actor and YouTuber who has been gathering a huge online following over the past few years.

Openly gay, Sivan describes ‘Bloom’ as a, ‘subversively queer song,’ that sees him take on the role of a passive guy losing his virginity. Although it’s full of innuendo, it is a really fun, subtle track that has an incredibly catchy chorus (but not in an obvious sense). It’s summery and deserves to be played loud…I expect his pride appearances this year will be huge!

No music video (as such) has been released, however a 3D animated lyric video, created by Jason Ebeyer, was released, featuring an animated version of Sivan floating through a fantasy land.

Jess Glynne – ‘I’ll Be There’

Jess Glynne is finally back with the first single since her 2015 debut, I Cry When I Laugh, indicating that her second album is on its way!

‘I’ll Be There’ is an uplifting track with very soulful and gospel-like qualities to it whilst maintaining a contemporary pop sound. It is a track that transcends as it progresses; this song makes it easy to see why she’s won a Grammy! I hope this is another Number 1 hit for her, like 2015’s debut, ‘Hold My Hand’.

The video itself doesn’t appear to have much of a narrative however the locations she performs in are pretty interesting and vibrant colours certainly play an important part throughout. Well worth a watch.

#MuzikSpeaks: An Interview with John Gibbons

Fresh off his set at Ireland’s Electric Picnic festival, I had the opportunity to chat to producer and DJ, John Gibbons, about the success of his recent single, ‘P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)’ and what he’s got in store for us in the coming months. We also had the chance to talk about who he’d really like to work with and what other passions he has, outside of music. It’s all here…

Hey John, how’s it going?
Really good thanks. Have just finished my set at Electric Picnic festival in Ireland, which is always a major highlight on the summer circuit so I’m in buoyant form and ready for the winter club season!

So you released ‘PYT’ back in April and the reception seems to have been incredible, how exciting has that been for you?
Very exciting indeed! The reaction to ‘PYT’ has been phenomenal all over the world and it’s immensely gratifying to receive constant feedback from so many people who feel it has done justice to the memory of Michael Jackson – something I was very conscious of whilst producing the track. I can’t wait for the next single now!

What future plans have you got? Any new singles or an album in the pipeline?
The most immediate plan is the release of the follow-up single to ‘PYT’. It’s an original track rather than a cover this time and will be out in the next couple of months so I’m looking forward to stepping things up another gear – it’s a banger! An album will follow at some point but for now the priority is the next couple of singles. I’ve a number of interesting remixes coming out soon too so keep an ear out for those.

Where do you take inspirations from when creating your music?
From all over. I listen to all styles of music and have done from a very young age so I like to draw inspiration from that diverse musical background. I also like to put a little of myself into each track so the direction of much of my music is also influenced by what’s going on in my life at any given time and sometimes past experiences also. Overall though, I want to make people feel good about themselves and transport them to a place where they can leave the world behind for just a few minutes while listening – expression is important but sharing the experience is even more important in my opinion.

If you could do a collaboration with anyone, who would it be and why?
The Weeknd
. I’m a big fan of him and vocally I think he’s so perfectly suited to what I do that he’d be foolish not to collab with me – our track would undoubtedly be the biggest moment in both of our shows – hit me up Abel!

What music have you been listening to most recently?
In terms of dance music I’ve been listening to and playing out a lot of the new wave of latin-influenced house that’s been shutting down shows all over this summer – hit up my radio show every week to hear loads! Otherwise I’ve been listening to loads of Huntar, a UK artist who I’m a huge fan of and is gonna be massive, also Irish band, Walking On Cars, lots of UK grime and I’m also really enjoying Australian artist, Wish I Was, at the moment too.

If you had to cover/remix a recent chart song, which song would it be and why?
I think ‘Glorious’ by Macklemore. The energy in that track is tailor-made for a big piano-house pop cover and his vocal would slot in deliciously. I can picture the live show together too – a high-octane match made in dancefloor heaven!

Do you have any other passions outside of music?
My big passion is tennis. Whilst I don’t play anything like as often as I used to in the past (which was all day every day as I grew up!), I’m still a huge fan of the sport and in particular Roger Federer – the guy is an inspiration on so many levels. I also love languages and am generally in the middle of learning a new one. At the moment it’s Polish!

What really grinds your gears?
The fact that most people in Western society spend too much time time looking outwards rather than inwards and down when we should be looking up. I feel the world would be a much better place if narcissism and vicariousness were replaced by quiet introspection and positive action.

What’s the best film you’ve seen lately?
The Truman Show. I know it’s not a recent movie but I watched it just yesterday. It’s my favourite movie of all time, closely followed by They Live. Two movies with mind-blowing messages for those with eyes to see…

If, in say 20 years time, a film was made about your life, who would you want to play you?
Leonardo di Caprio – sure we already look practically identical!

If you could be any chocolate bar, which one would you be?
A Star Bar. That’s the direction I’m always reaching and where I’d be most at home!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Read between the lines…

#ThrowbackThursday: Darren Hayes – ‘On The Verge Of Something Wonderful’

It’s been a decade since Darren Hayes released the first single from his third album (This Delicate Thing We’ve Made), ‘On The Verge Of Something Wonderful’.

It is a truly captivating song with some fantastic trademark highs in Hayes’ voice – it’s a powerful and emotive track that really stood apart from the rest of mainstream music at that time, by reigniting the 80s sound. The track (and in fact the rest of the album) was recorded with the help of a 1983 Fairlight CMI synthesizer.

It reached Number 20 in the UK charts and not only did the song have a very 80s feel to it but so did the video. The music video contains a cameo appearance by Janice Dickinson and features Darren singing in front of a series of animated backdrops – it is reminiscent of the Max Headroom TV series, certain scenes from the film Electric Dreams and the graphics of some Atari brochures from the early 80s.

Do you have some great memories of this track? Have you got a #ThrowbackThursday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#ThrowbackThursday: Holly Valance – ‘Kiss Kiss’

Has it really been 15 years since Holly Valance released ‘Kiss Kiss’? Well at the start of May 2017, the song will be 15 years old and boy has time gone quickly for this track!

‘Kiss Kiss’ was Holly Valance‘s debut single after breaking away from her acting career in the Australian soap, Neighbours and it quickly rocketed to Number 1 in the UK charts. As a result of this, Valance had a string of hits and a couple of albums during the early 00s but since then, has been relatively quiet on the musical front, instead concentrating on being an ambassador for Disability Rights International.

What a great song and a brilliant blast from the past! Please share this post and re-live some memories 🙂

What are your thoughts of this old-school pop classic? Got a #ThrowbackThursday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

Zara Larsson – ‘I Would Like’

Swedish singer, Zara Larsson, has been making waves across UK radio since last year and her recent single, ‘I Would Like’, is no exception.

The song is a huge pop anthem and sees Larsson put her trademark voice to good use and samples ‘Dat Sexy Body’ by the Jamaican singer Sasha.

It is the second single to be taken from Zara’s upcoming, second studio album and has already spent quite a while in the Top 10 of the UK charts, peaking at Number 2!

No official video has been released as of yet, so check out the lyric video below.

Starley – ‘Call On Me (Ryan Riback Remix)’

‘Call On Me’ was the debut single from Australian singer Starley back in July 2016 but it was the remix, by Ryan Riback, that has recently found success across Europe.

It takes on that pop/tropical house style that is currently so popular but somehow still remains unique due to Starley‘s fantastic, catchy chorus. I’m definitely excited to see what else she releases in the future!

No video has been released for the remix single release but you can check it out in a YouTube video below.

Kungs is a French DJ and Cookin’ On 3 Burners are an Australian 3-piece who merge funk, soul and jazz.

‘This Girl’ was originally a song recorded by Cookin’ On 3 Burners but since Kungs came along and put his spin on it, it’s become massive!

The song entered the UK charts at Number 5 but went on to knock Justin Timberlake‘s ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’ off the Number 1 spot, earning it a Number 1! It’s no wonder either, the song is so summery and funky – it’s just got this awesome vibe to it and the ultimate #FeelGoodFriday song!

Sheppard are an Australian indie-pop band, consisting of 6 members; siblings George, Amy and Emma Sheppard, plus Michael Butler, Jason Bovino and Dean Gordon.

The group found its earliest formation in 2009 and by 2013, the line-up was complete. In 2014, the band released their first album, ‘Bombs Away’. The song ‘Geronimo’ was the second single taken from the album and really made its mark.

The song is the epitome of awesome! It’s perfection in a pop song with its indie pop feel, catchy hook and intense tempo.

It has been featured in the Disney show, Girl Meets World, on the trailer for the film Paper Planes and is also in the film, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.
