#WildCardWednesday: Wallows – ‘Pictures Of Girls’

facebook-like   Instagram

Wallows are an American indie/alternative rock band from LA, consisting of Braeden Lemasters (best known for his role in Men Of A Certain Age), Elliot Rose, Cole Preston and Dylan Minnette (the main character in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why).

The band have actually played together for quite a few years, under many different names but having released a few successful singles, independently, are now signed to Atlantic Records.

‘Pictures Of Girls’ was the band’s first single taken from their 2018 Atlantic-released EP, Spring. It’s an indie track that serves as a great summer anthem and is in some ways similar to something by The Strokes or Foster The People

The music video deals heaps of nostalgia with its authentic use of Super 8 film and sees the band getting up to various antics around the suburbs; its a fantastic companion piece of video art to go with the song itself.

Great track, wonderful EP, let’s see what exciting things they bring over the next few months and years!

What are your thoughts of this up-and-coming band? Got a #WildCardWednesday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

YONAKA are an edgy, in-your-face, Brighton-based band that have just released the follow-up to their October 2017 EP, Heavy. Their new single, ‘F.W.T.B.’ is a monstrous track that is all about self-empowerment!

Front-woman and lead singer, Theresa Jarvis, has stated that, “The song is a big “f**k you” to anyone who tries to get in your way and tell you no. It’s about taking back the power, standing up for yourself and being heard.”

It is a track that reigns very true for me personally and it’s great to hear a song that is about standing up for what you believe in. It’s also the perfect track for our first #FreakyFriday post – something a bit different to our usual #FeelGoodFriday posts.

Not only have the band been gathering a lot of support and notoriety with the press, but they are scheduled for a string of European festival dates this summer with a big headline date at the Electric Ballroom, London on 11th October 2018 too! (Tickets available here).

#Review: Hawthorne Heights – Bad Frequencies

facebook-like   Instagram

Hawthorne Heights are an American emo/rock band from Dayton, Ohio, which formed in 2001. The band currently consists of JT Woodruff (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Matt Ridenour (bass guitar, backing vocals), Mark McMillon (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Chris Popadak (drums, percussion). To date, the band have released 5 studio albums and been through a variety of line-up changes but now, in 2018, the band are releasing their sixth studio album, Bad Frequencies, through Pure Noise Records. Here’s what we have to say about it…

Hawthorne Heights - Bad Frequencies

This is certainly an album of two mindsets; on the one hand you’ve got a new sound that sees the band edging ever closer to pop punk commerciality and on the other hand they are sticking to their more screamo roots. However you look at it, the band are diversifying and growing their sound at the same time as keeping hold on some of what the fans love.

‘In Gloom’ launches the album with a slow, heartfelt intro from vocalist/guitarist JT Woodruff, but after the first minute, we are thrust into the sound of the full band, making their triumphant return.

The nostalgia continues as first single, ‘Pink Hearts’, reflects on past relationships you carelessly work your way through in your younger years.

An exciting balance of old and new, Hawthorne Heights have made a triumphant return!

More old-school, classic Hawthorne Heights can be heard on tracks such as ‘Crimson Sand’ and ‘Just Another Ghost’ with bassist, Mark McMillion’s, screams coming through in full force.

Meanwhile, ‘Edge Of Town’ and ‘Starlighter (Echo, Utah)’ show us the newer, more pop-punk driven sound that moves this record, and indeed the band, forward.

Possibly one of the most stand-out tracks on the record is ‘Pills’; the song deals with the loss of someone you care deeply about but it demonstrates brilliantly, how the band have grown and continue to push their songwriting and sound; where in the past this might have been a heavy, scream track or an altogether more simplistic affair; a great way to finish the album by showing off where the band’s future lies.

That’s not to say the band that people know and love is gone; there are emo lyrics throughout record and still the occasional screaming, it’s just the instrumentation is slicker and more intricate and in places, JT Woodruff uses falsetto in his vocals; something new and interesting for the band’s sound.

There’s no doubt about it; this band know how to write catchy hooks, tying together some of the heavier, more chaotic parts of the record. Armed with a whole load of history and self-reflection plus a strong sense of where they are heading, this record is definitely representative of both their past and the future for the band. An exciting balance of old and new, Hawthorne Heights have made a triumphant return!

#MuzikSpeaks: An Interview with Everywhere

facebook-like   Instagram

Everywhere released their most recent single, ‘Moments’, back in 2017 and their fantastic EP, Fiction Act back in 2016, but have been busy doing a whole range of things, from writing to gigging and much more, since then. We were lucky enough to get some time to catch up with them and chat about a few things. Here’s what they had to say…

Hey, how’s it going?
Hey man! Awesome, how about you??

Very well thank you. Obviously you recently released your awesome new single, ‘Moments’, and the reception seems to have been great. Is this a sign of a new EP or album in the pipeline?
Thank you so much! Yes, ‘Moments’ was a sort of in the middle kind of track to keep the juice flowing. We’re currently penning another bunch of tunes that should end up on another EP, hopefully around this fall!

What other future plans have you guys got?
We’re looking at getting out on another tour to promote some new music, also doing loads of writing for film and TV in Hollywood. We’ve become kind of a factory 🙂

That sounds incredible! Where do you take inspirations from when writing your music?
We recently discovered a pretty neat trick, think it was Taylor Swift who said it. Basically, we write down fun and cool titles as they come to mind and during our daily writing sessions, we work these titles around tracks that we make. It’s an easy was to stay creative and never let the process stall.

What’s your usual process for writing/recording?
Our frontman Max has his daily sessions, when he sits down and builds tracks in Logic, he then takes those tracks into writing sessions with London writers and producers and builds demos. He then takes those demos to the rest of the band who expands on those arrangements. When we have a good amount of songs, or sketches we then head into a bigger studio such as Abbey Road, or if we happen to be over in LA we go to East West where we create the final master.

Wow! Abbey Road…pretty cool. So, if you could do a collaboration with anyone, who would it be and why?
It would be a pure pleasure to work with Max Martin. Just for the pure fact that he’s had so many Billboard hits and is a fellow Swede.

What music have you been listening to most recently?
Mostly our own, as we’re currently doing loads of writing. Other than that it’s the usual suspects, a good mix of classic rock and top 40 hits. Recently rediscovered Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure and loads of other nice little nuggets from the past.

If you had to cover a recent chart song, which song would it be and why?
It would probably be ‘Rockstar’ by Post Malone, such a masterpiece.

What makes a great show for you?
One where people turn up and go nuts. A sold-out show is always a great one.

Do you have any pre-show or post-show rituals?
The singer, Max, always stays sober but drinks a Red Bull while the rest of the band get hammered.

Haha! Has anything scary ever happened to you on tour?
This would be a perfect place to deliver a well crafted lie, but unfortunately, besides a few heavily overweight old women going for a good grab from behind, that large disaster is yet to arrive *knock on wood*

Do you have any other passions outside of music?
Politics, painting and reading.

What really grinds your gears?
Death Metal, not the greatest thing since bread. Wouldn’t categorically call it bad but generally it’s not up our street.

What’s the best film you’ve seen lately?
I must say The Disaster Artist was amazing, just had me nailed from beginning to end and would warmly recommend it to anyone.

If, in say 20 years time, a film was made about your life, who would you want to play you?
Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Edward Norton and Mark Wallberg, directed by Michael Bay.

Haha! That’d be one EPIC movie! If you could be any chocolate bar, which one would you be?
Snickers.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Focus on your craft and the rest will follow. People tend to overestimate their skills and always wonder why the success never happens.

#ThrowbackThursday: Crazy Town – ‘Butterfly’

Crazy Town are an American rock/rap band who were formed in 1995 by Bret Mazur and Seth Binzer. ‘Butterfly’ is the band’s best known single, which reached Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts in 2000, which in turn prompted the release of their debut album, The Gift of Game, that went on to sell over 1.5 million units.

Crazy Town - The Gift of Game.jpg

The guitar melody which opens the song is a head-bopping, body-swaying beat that is followed up by a high hat, drum beat and of course vocals.  Even though the lyrics could be argued to be rather simplistic; “Come, my lady. Come, come, my lady. You’re my butterfly. Sugar. Baby.” There is no denying that ‘Butterfly’ is an extremely catchy, throwback tune.

The music video for the song was directed by the team who worked on the well-known movie, The Matrix as well as What Dreams May Come. The video depicts the band in a fantasy, make-believe forest surrounded by butterflies. The fantasy, magical vibe continues as Shifty’s star tattoo flies off into the air, as well as two women sporting butterfly wings, walking around in the forest.

#WildCardWednesday: YONAKA – ‘Bubblegum’

YONAKA are a fantastic Brighton-based band who consist of Theresa Jarvis (Vocals), George Edwards (Guitar), Alex Crosby (Bass/Keys) and Robert Mason (Drums). The band refer to themselves as ‘Dark Alt Pop with heavy riffs’ and I couldn’t agree more; their latest track, ‘Bubblegum’ fuses electro-pop vibes with grungy guitars and it’s all topped off with Theresa‘s vocals (which I find have similarities to Charli XCX).

The video has just been released and it really depicts just what YONAKA are all about – it’s visually intriguing and oddly artistic; what more can you expect from a Brighton-grown band eh?!

You must check out this wonderful song and accompanying video – it’s well worth it!

#FeelGoodFriday: OneRepublic – ‘No Vacancy’

After releasing an open letter to fans, in which Ryan Tedder reveals that he nearly suffered a nervous breakdown and pulled the plug on the band, he informed fans that OneRepublic were changing!

From now on, the band are planning to release new music as and whenever they can – no album cycles, just new music! This is a refreshing outlook for a band and means that they won’t be bound by recording albums in the same way any more.

As such, the first single the band have released (after pretty much abandoning promotion of the uber diverse record, Oh My My) is their new track, ‘No Vacancy’ and my word is it a summer banger!

The track has hints at the current tropical house trend yet still retains that iconic OneRepublic sound – the track is an instant hit and just reinforces the golden nuggets they can produce!

No music video’s been released but the lyric video is below – check it out!

#MellowMonday: A R I Z O N A – ‘Electric Touch’

A R I Z O N A are an incredible electro-pop band, who have over 200 million streams on Spotify, to date, and over 9 million monthly listeners, and signed to Atlantic Records just over 12 months ago.

They just dropped their latest single, ‘Electric Touch’ and it’s beautiful. A modern-day love song, crafted perfectly, with a little help from singer and songwriter, Julia Michaels.

Not only in the song incredible, but the music video is too – it is a moving video, starring a true-life young gay couple, and tells their story throughout. The couple contacted the band, asking for a short message, but in turn the band decided to honour them in a music video. It’s a real must-see, so check it out below.

In relation to the video, Hailee Ritcey (one of the two main characters in the story) shared the following on social media:

“For a long time this day has filled me with so much fear and anxiety. I’ve never been really sure what I would say, why I felt like I needed to post, or why it even mattered at all. It’s taken me a long time to come to this level of confidence with myself and with my relationship. I have been so lucky to have wonderful family and friends that have really helped me to this point. And I’ve realized the people that truly love and care about you always will, regardless. So a few months ago Carly and I took a trip to Seattle to see one of our favorite bands. Because their music means so much to us I decided to reach out to them. I knew it was a long shot to even get a response but then they took it one step further. They asked us to tell our story through their music. So this is my girlfriend. And this is A R I Z O N A. Thank you A R I Z O N A for creating this incredible opportunity for us and thank you for your music. So much love!”

ZAYN – ‘LIKE I WOULD’

ZAYN is back with the follow-up single to his massive, debut, smash hit, ‘PILLOWTALK’ and I think this one’s going to be just as big!

Following in the same, mature vein of pop, the song has that edgy sound he’s worked so hard on crafting, since his departure from 1D.

If he can secure another Number 1 with this song, I think he’ll be set to take on the world!

No video has emerged as of yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted when one does.

The Starting Line – ‘Anyways’

After a few years away and a new full-time member, American pop-punk band, The Starting Line, have made a triumphant return! It was in December 2015 that the band released the title-track to their new EP, Anyways ahead of its release in February 2016.

This song is the title-track to their newest EP release and has proven very popular with fans.

I’m so pleased to see this band return as they’ve got something great about them!
