#TunefulTuesday: Simple Creatures – ‘One Little Lie’

facebook_logos_PNG19751.png    ios_homescreen_icon.png   app-icon2.png

Simple Creatures are an American pop rock duo made up of Mark Hoppus (blink-182, +44) and Alex Gaskarth (All Time Low).

To date, the pair have released a couple of EPs – both in 2019 – and had a string of singles but possibly their most catchy song is this track, ‘One Little Lie’. This is such a great crossover between pop and pop punk with it’s rockier verses and synthpop style choruses that you can’t help but just want to listen to it over and over again.

Lyrically it is diverse too and resonates with quite a few people, I’m sure – I know it means a lot to me and provides an anthem for my own recent struggles, so I’m sure it does for others too.

The video for the song is pretty fun too, packed with facts and lies, leaving the viewer to decipher between fact and fiction as the pair become increasingly surrounded by objects referenced in some of the lyrics.

Turn this track up loud, put it on repeat and enjoy the video!

What are your thoughts of this duo’s catchy track and fun video? Do you have a #TunefulTuesday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#Review: Against The Current – Past Lives 👁

facebook-like   Instagram

Against The Current are an American pop rock band from New York, who formed in 2011. The band is made up of Chrissy Costanza (lead vocals), Dan Gow (guitars) and Will Ferri (drums). The band are notable for regularly posting covers on YouTube as well as delighting fans with original tracks too. In 2016, after signing to Fueled By Ramen, the band released their debut album, In Our Bones. Now, 2018 sees the band releasing their second full-length record, Past Lives. Here’s what we have to say about it…

Against The Current - Past Lives.jpg

This stunningly diverse and charming record opens with the almost haunting ‘Strangers Again’, dealing with getting over a relationship and cutting ties. The guitar line is dreamy and the vocal breakdown towards the end is a rather quiet and personal moment that really draws you in. It’s a brilliant way to open a record; it doesn’t go in all guns blazing but instead captivates the audience with its beautiful soundscapes.

Next is probably the best track on record, ‘The Fuss’. With Daft Punk-esque, 80s synths, funky guitar rhythms and one hell of a catchy chorus, this is a track you will just want to play really loud and dance like mad to!

Other significant songs include: ‘I Like The Way’ – a track all about new love that almost reaches EDM territory with its strong piano line. It’s something you might expect from the likes of Sigala‘s Easy Love or Sweet Lovin’; ‘Voices’ is a slightly more grungy offering about being self-conflicted and trying to ignore the internal voices (which is reflected perfectly with whispering backing vocals) – it’s very Paramore meets Fickle Friends, whilst ‘Scream’ is a rather floaty and dreamy song – for some reason it evokes images of the perfect all-American family from the 1960s (no idea why!) It’s an uplifting yet subtle track; I keep finding myself going back for more.

‘Personal’ has a Taylor Swift-like quality to it and the production is incredible – the vocal harmonies sit beneath the rest of the production in the chorus, but it’s truly enchanting. ‘P.A.T.T.’ (short for Pretty All The Time) is an out and out female empowerment anthem – it’s fast-paced, punchy and relatively simplistic but the message is fun and powerful about girls feeling like they should be allowed to be themselves without having to look “pretty all the time”…calling all, “Girls!”

It’s an impeccably well-crafted record which has very successfully merged the boundaries between dance, pop and rock music, with a sprinkling of 80s vibes on top.

Lastly, ‘Friendly Reminder’ is another notable song, it’s certainly an album track rather than a potential single but the use of a phaser effect on the vocals and an epic clap-along chorus towards the end make it really stand out…again, there’s a big 80s vibe to it.

What Against The Current manage to do so well throughout, is take you on a journey with them; when they’re soaring high, you’ll feel all the sparks of excitement with them brought about with big synth sounds, intense beats and tons of reverb but equally when melancholy reigns, you’ll feel their heartache too.

Whilst I could say something about every track on the record, I won’t – you just need to experience it for yourself. I really can’t recommend this highly enough…the only reason it didn’t get a 5 is because there are one or two less stand-out, album-fillers but even those are pretty damn good. It is very much an album which marks a band that have found their feet; they’ve created something wonderfully catchy yet utterly credible with sincere lyricism, interesting melodies and top-notch production.

It’s an impeccably well-crafted record which has very successfully merged the boundaries between dance, pop and rock music, with a sprinkling of 80s vibes on top; it’s difficult to pigeonhole this band…in a good way! It’s a truly exciting time for the band; this will certainly make waves in the genre and undoubtedly pave an exciting path for their future!

#MellowMonday: Naaz – ‘Can’t’

Naaz is certainly an exciting young artist who is writing well beyond her years. At 19 years old, she has the writing style of someone much wiser and her latest single is enthralling.

She defines her style as “quirk-pop” and that’s just what it is – it’s not your run-of-the-mill anthemic club-anthem style, but instead she uses subtle, interesting melodies. She states that, “The song is about things we want but can’t have. I’m wearing my kurdish pyjamas and normal everyday clothing. Showing both sides of my life, taking place in the same location: my bedroom. The world where I can be everything I am, and there’s nothing I ‘Can’t’.”

The video is just as artistically warm and beautiful and well worth a watch. If you haven’t heard this track yet, you must – this is most definitely an artist you need to watch out for!

What are your thoughts of this stunningly talented and beautifully melodic singer-songwriter? Have you got a #MellowMonday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#MellowMonday: Zoology – ‘Maroon’

Zoology are a fantastic duo who manage to combine vintage R&B vocals with slick summery beats, with their latest single, ‘Maroon’.

“Maroon was actually the first song we wrote in the same room,” says Zoology’s Emily, “The process flowed so easily being together as opposed to bouncing ideas across the other side of the world.”

‘Maroon’ is a song that manages to take you on a journey, through its brilliantly subtle production, silky vocals and superbly catchy melodies. This is a remarkably rare track as it manages to be much more memorable than your average club banger and it really stands out in a world currently saturated with tropical house.

No official video exists at the moment, but we’ll keep you updated on this.

Zoology was born against the odds. Chance acquaintances Emily and Beau started the project in different countries and released first track, ‘Escape’, in 2016, without having ever met; they are an act like no other right now!

An incredibly hot track right now!

#ThrowbackThursday: Orson – ‘No Tomorrow’

Orson were a Brit-award wining band from Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.

The band formed in 2000 and split in 2007, but it wasn’t until 2006 that the band really gained their first success, with their debut single, ‘No Tomorrow’.

This song ended up reaching Number 1 in the UK charts and went on to become the UK’s 12th best-selling single of 2006! Although many people think of the band as one-hit-wonders, they did in fact have 2 albums!

The song is a Power Pop/Indie Rock belter that just screams to be chanted at the top of your lungs, so go on, rock out your #ThrowbackThursday like it’s 2006 again!

#Two4Tunesday: Dappy – ‘100 (Built For This)’ & Frankmusik – ‘This’

It looks like we’ve come full circle from our very first #Two4Tunesday post, when we previously featured these two epic artists (Dappy & Frankmusik), but they’ve both recently released new songs and now I can’t get their latest offerings out of my head! I admire these two guys greatly and so it’s only right that I support them again and share their incredible talents with you, once more!

When we first posted about these two artists, they both showed their support by re-tweeting the post, which was amazing! We’re keeping our fingers crossed that they like our latest writing about them.

Dappy Banner2

Dappy‘s latest song, ‘100 (Built For This)’ is a more somber offering than his previous release but its chorus is hard-hitting and genuine. N-Dubz may be no more, but Dappy certainly doesn’t need them, he’s smashing it on his own, and deservedly so…the man’s a lyrical genius and a monster-hit songwriter!

This song is set to feature on his long-awaited second album, ‘Miracles’, which is yet to see a release date, but we’ll keep you posted on this.

Dappy – ‘100 (Built For This)’

‘100 (Built For This)’ is due for release on 17th July 2015. You can (and should) pre-order it on iTunes now – https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/100-built-for-this-single/id997791445

Frankmusik - This Banner

Meanwhile, Frankmusik has recently offered us a new song, ‘This’ which he states is from a new album he is working on!

Frankmusik should be admired for his honesty (as a person – he always updates his Facebook with his inner thoughts and feelings and puts his heart on the line with this…not many artists are like that!) and constant desire to develop and grow, as an artist! He consistently tries to adapt his style and sound, and this is evident each time he puts out a new album.

This song sees him move, yet again, in a new direction and sound, and I personally can’t wait to hear his new album, whenever it may be released.

#FeelGoodFriday: Melanie Fiona – ‘Please Don’t Go (Cry Baby)’

Melanie Fiona Banner

This song defines ‘feel-good’ for me! Whenever I’m down, this is the song I play to pick myself up again! It’s catchy, it’s upbeat, it’s reminiscent of Motown with a clear soul edge to it – it’s just so HAPPY!

Melanie Fiona is from Canada and has worked with the likes of Drake; she was previously signed to Universal Motown Records but now resides with Universal Republic Records and has even received a Grammy Nomination for ‘Best Female R&B Vocal Performance’, for her single ‘It Kills Me’.

This song was never released as a single, but was instead an album track from her debut album, ‘The Bridge’. I really don’t know what more I can say about this; it’s just AWESOME!

#FeelGoodFriday: Kelly Clarkson – ‘Heartbeat Song’

Kelly Clarkson Banner

I love this song!

Pop at it’s best; catchy, upbeat, feel-good, not to mention Kelly Clarkson’s epic vocal abilities. Sure, this may be cheesy, but I can’t get enough of it, the bridge through to the chorus is euphoric and as for the breakdown at the end of the song, well, amazing!

Whatever you may think of her (Katie Hopkins, Chris Wallace and Mike Gallagher!) this woman can sing!!!

Have you got that Friday feeling yet? What’s making you ‘Feel-Good’ today? Share your song to help brighten our day 🙂

#Two4Tunesday: Dappy – ‘Beautiful Me’ & Frankmusik – ‘Stabilizher’

So, right now I can’t get these two songs out of my head!

Dappy Banner

Dappy’s latest song, ‘Beautiful Me’ is a well-crafted song and follows his usual, honest lyricism. The song builds up nicely to an epic and anthemic chorus. This song sees the return of Dappy, with a sure-fire hit! ‘Beautiful Me’ is released 29th March 2015.

Dappy – ‘Beautiful Me’

Frankmusik Banner

Meanwhile, Frankmusik’s song ‘Stabilizher’ is a catchy, electro-pop anthem. His repetative chorus marries nicely with his impeccable production to sculpt a fantastic little tune! I defy anyone not enjoy this!
