#Review: Chromeo – Head Over Heels 👠

Muzik Speaks Loves Atlantic Records - SmallerChromeo are an electro-funk duo from Canada, consisting of David “Dave 1” Macklovitch and Patrick “P-Thugg” Gemayel. To date, the pair have released four studio albums, but Head Over Heels marks their fifth album and debut release with our pals over at Atlantic Records.

Chromeo - Head Over Heels.jpg

The first I knew of Chromeo, was their remix of Maroon 5‘s ‘Wait’ (as featured on our re:MIXTAPE playlist), so I must be forgiven for not having heard much of their back catalogue. However, taking this album at face value, it is a strong release with a stunningly contemporary take on disco and funk music.

Having worked together for the past 15 years, it’s clear to see that these guys have perfected their sound, which is a perfect amalgamation of modern, electro-pop music with synth-driven disco and bass-slapping funk.

This is certainly an album that doesn’t take itself too seriously – it’s intentionally fun and funky, with its saucy innuendos and genre-perfect production qualities, the likes of Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rogers would be proud of.

The album kick-starts with the tantalising ‘Must’ve Been’ (featuring DRAM) – a slap bass, groovy-guitar, vocoder-infused anthem, that excellently demonstrates what’s in store throughout the rest of the record.

With the music up and a house to yourself (…or packed with friends), there really will be no holding you back!

Other memorable moments include the wonderfully repetitive ‘Don’t Sleep’ (featuring French Montana and Stefflon Don) with its laid-back 80s vibes and sensational vocal harmonies, whilst ‘One Track Mind’ is an understated yet seriously catchy track consisting of beautiful talk box, vocal melodies towards the end – it’s very similar to something you might hear by Charlie Puth.

Meanwhile, ‘Bad Decision’ is all about splashing the cash on a girl and has a definite Prince-esque vibe to it; high-pitched vocals on top of some superb little guitar riffs and ‘Right Back Home To You (Interlude)’ is a track you can get surprisingly hooked on – think funky soul meets jazz lounge, topped with sweeping high-pitched vocals; there’s a real 70s quality to it.

Towards the end of the album, it all comes together on the two-part, ‘Bedroom Calling’. Part One is a truly anthemic mellow jam with atmospheric, reverb-driven bass notes and slow drum beats, whilst Part Two (featuring The-Dream) is a much more upbeat, pop tune that is oozing with shimmering synths.

To those who say quality disco music doesn’t get made any more, I would simply reply, “Chromeo”. This is definitely not an album you can listen to without, at the very least, bobbing your head and tapping you toe, but in reality, with the music up and a house to yourself (…or packed with friends), there really will be no holding you back!

#Two4Tunesday: Charlie Puth – ‘Attention’ & Yes Lad – ‘Walk Away’

Charlie Puth – ‘Attention’

Charlie Puth has been going from strength to strength and whilst I wasn’t a fan of his big hit, ‘Marvin Gaye’, I loved his collaboration with Selena Gomez on We Don’t Talk Any More. Since then, it appears the singer songwriter is gearing up to release a new album with brand new single, ‘Attention’ leading the way.

The song is catchy and I love the way the percussion builds up throughout the track – the bass line is funky and his vocals are great (even if auto tune has been used evidently). A great single and a surefire sign of great things to come.

The music video is steamy and features Puth in a tumultuous relationship, breaking up with glass flying before kissing and making up and starting the cycle all over again. Check it out below.

Yes Lad – ‘Walk Away’

Yes Lad are a five-piece boyband who emerged on the scene after their appearances on X Factor UK.

The electro-pop song is tinged with urban sounds and makes for a fantastic debut single from the band. ‘Walk Away’ is catchy, and follows the current trend of having sampled vocals over the chorus but it’s unique in it’s own way – an impressive debut, looking forward to seeing what the boys release next.

The music video for the track, was filmed in Manchester and features the band performing the track, and showing off some impressive dance moves.

Major Lazer – ‘Cold Water’ featuring Justin Bieber & MØ

Once again, Major Lazer have teamed up with previous collaborators, Justin Bieber and  to create a new, surefire hit, in the form of ‘Cold Water’.

‘Cold Water’ was penned by Benny Blanco and Ed Sheeran among others and features two awesome vocalists. It has major influences from the tropical house genre, as well as some dance style to it too. It’s a very vibrant song and sure to be a hit this summer, probably similarly to their previous smash hit, ‘Lean On’.

What are your thoughts on this new Major Lazer song?

Charlie Puth – ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ featuring Selena Gomez

Charlie Puth rose to fame mainly after his feature on the Wiz Khalifa track, See You Again. Since then, he’s had a string of hits and most recently he released ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ from his debut album, Nine Track Mind.

This song is also tropical house in style with influences of dance – it’s actually beautifully crafted – the duet vocals sit nicely on top of the house beat and remain relaxed yet catchy in their feel. Although it hasn’t done amazingly in the charts, it caught my attention when I heard Nick Grimshaw play it on Radio 1 recently!

No official video has been released but I’ve included a live version as well as a YouTube audio video. *UPDATE* An official video has now been released – it’s really interesting with the split screen but it’s a shame he didn’t get Selena Gomez in it too.

Have you checked out this track yet? What are your opinions of it?

#MuzikSpeaks: An Interview with Life Of Dillon (2015)

So, here we are with another interview; this time with the incredible acoustic house trio Life Of Dillon!

Having released their debut single, Overload, earlier this year, the band look set for great things, with their album due out later in the year.

The guys were a real pleasure to chat to; they were down-to-earth, genuine and kind. They showed not only an interest in the questions but even turned some of them on me, which was brilliant!

Continuing from the tradition set in our previous Zebrahead and Frankmusik interviews, we asked Life Of Dillon to take part in a game of ‘Would You Rather…?’ with 3 different, usual levels; Tame (#WYRtame), Awkward (#WYRawkward) and WTF?! (#WYRwtf).

I hope that you guys will have as much fun watching this interview as I did filming it and please, please share this video on your social media accounts!

#FeelGoodFriday: Wiz Khalifa – ‘See You Again’ featuring Charlie Puth

Wiz Khalifa Banner

This song means an awful lot to me right now; as a teacher I strive to make a difference in children’s lives each and every day and I was honoured to have this song sung to me (as a complete surprise!) by 4 of the most amazing students that I had the privilege of teaching last year; they surprised me with their performance on their last day at the school this year! Needless to say, it was emotional and a real privilege; it made me feel like I had truly made a difference even in just a few lives!

This song is known for its connection to Paul Walker, who tragically died during the filming of Fast and Furious 7 but it has taken on a new meaning for me…that’s the true power of music!

Whilst the message and intent behind the song is about a sad occasion, it also is feel-good, as it’s looking for the positives in a sad situation and for that reason, it’s my #FeelGoodFriday song of choice this week.

Does this song have an emotional attachment for you? Have you got any similar feel-good songs? Please comment below.
