#WildCardWednesday: Firing All Cylinders – ‘What Is Love’ (Haddaway Cover)

facebook_logos_PNG19751.png    ios_homescreen_icon.png   app-icon2.png

I am a huge sucker for 90s dance classics, so when I saw that Firing All Cylinders had done a metal version of ‘What Is Love’ by Haddaway, I was all ears. The Californian metallers toyed with the idea that initially started as a joke but we are happy they went with it!

If you don’t know the song by title, you will certainly know it by its opening synth hook. ‘What Is Love’ charted across the world in 1993, but by no means set it on fire, however, it has become a cult classic along 90s music fans. Firing All Cylinders have kept the essence of the track by keeping that oh so recognisable synth motif almost exactly as it sounds on the original, but have brought their own metal chug and groove underneath.

Personally I love it, but I know it will divide a lot of people. It’s not the first time we’ve seen metal bands do this to beloved pop songs, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. 90s dance just seems to lend itself well to this kind of thing. However unlike others, I feel the band have not strayed too far away from the original that it is not recognisable. There are no heavy breakdowns, no guttural screams just a homage to a classic.

The video really stretches the idea of what love is. The original video had a slight dark feel to it (for the 90s anyway), but Firing All Cylinders have taken it about 1,000 steps further. It’s dark, it’s ritualistic and involves sacrifice and is probably more what fans of the band would expect.

We aren’t too fussed by the video, but the track is definitely worth a listen for all you 90s dance cross metal fans out there!

What are your thoughts of this metal band’s cover of the 90s dance classic? Do you have a cool cover for #WildCardWednesday to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#FeelGoodFriday: Steve Aoki & Darren Criss – ‘Crash Into Me’

facebook_logos_PNG19751.png    ios_homescreen_icon.png   app-icon2.png

Steve Aoki is known for being an incredible musician, DJ and producer, for having worked with countless incredible artists and for his unique brand of EDM music. Darren Criss is known for his acting and singing talents in Glee and for portraying Andrew Cunanan in the second series of American Crime Story. But, together they have created this incredibly catchy, upbeat and all-round feel-good version of Dave Matthews Band‘s classic track, ‘Crash Into Me’.

23 years after the original release of the song, the pair have created a rather unlikely cover that just works so well! They have beautifully blended real instruments (acoustic guitar) with some incredible dance elements, Darren Criss‘ smooth, pop vocals plus one hell of sick drop, to turn this ballad into an EDM powerhouse of a track that is just all-out, unapologetic fun.

It certainly isn’t an obvious choice of cover but the pair have made a song that I just can’t get enough of – put it on, turn it up and just enjoy every moment of it.

Check out the quirky, yet rather funny video (below) too – the animation is pretty hilarious!

#MuzikSpeaks: An Interview with John Gibbons

I recently had the privilege of doing a Skype interview with Irish producer and remixer, John Gibbons, following the release of his latest single and cover of the massive 1994, ‘Hotstepper’.

We spoke all about how some of his cover versions came to be, who he’d most like to collaborate with, what his passions are outside of music and one of his most embarrassing moments on stage. It’s all here…

John Gibbons‘ releases are all available:

#WildCardWednesday: Vanessa Carlton – ‘Dreams’

facebook-like   Instagram

Vanessa Carlton is probably most notable for her 2002 smash hit, ‘A Thousand Miles but she is so much more than that!

With 5 studio albums now under her belt, she has certainly been busy writing and recording music and touring the world. She is also now beginning to prepare a new album. However, until then, she will begin to release one cover song a month (starting with a cover of Robyn‘s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’ in March 2018), while she continues work on her upcoming sixth album.

April 2018’s cover is the huge, classic Fleetwood Mac song, ‘Dreams’. This is a very close rendition to the original but with much more haunting vocals and instrumentals, created by the subtle reverb on Carlton’s voice and the guitars. Whilst covers tend to divide opinions and people often state that they “don’t live up to the original”, this is a superb modernisation of the track and pays a brilliant homage to the original; well done Vanessa Carlton! I can’t wait to see which cover you do next!

No music video has been released, but the audio video can be seen and heard below.

Jon White (aka Nevada) has just dropped his debut single which features samples of Mark Morrison‘s Return Of The Mack along with an added verse from Fetty Wap.

We featured ‘Return Of The Mack’ earlier this year, as it’s been 20 years since its release, but this remake serves as an homage to mark the track’s 20th anniversary. It’s fresh, modernised and still as funky as it ever was!

I look forward to hearing more from Nevada in the future but for now, this needs to be cranked up, skanked out to and enjoyed to its fullest!

What are your thoughts of this remake? Has this modernisation worked well? Please let us know your thoughts or own #FeelGoodFriday suggestions in a comment below or via our social media.

Conor Maynard has recently been hard at work, recording a whole bunch of covers for a special album released, cleverly titled, Covers.

The YouTube sensation found fame by uploading cover videos to YouTube, and as such, continues to do so.

This version of Shawn Mendes‘ Number 1 hit, is stripped back and ballad-like – it’s a beautiful stance on an incredible track and has given a different feel entirely. This re-imagining, also goes to show just how amazing Conor Maynard‘s voice is…and also, how much we need a new originals album from him!

What are your thoughts on this cover? Do you like Conor Maynard’s voice? How badly do you want to hear a new originals album from him? Please share the link and post your own #MellowMonday choices in a comment below.

It’s been four years since any new music has emerged from her, but Nelly Furtado is finally back with an acoustic cover of Calvin Harris’ ‘Feel So Close’.

The song is not the most obvious choice for a first new single, but it shows off her voice superbly.

It’s given me a taste for her new music and I can’t wait for her sixth album now!

What do you think of this cover? Are you a Nelly Furtado fan? Excited for her new album? Please share your #MellowMonday song choices with us in a comment below or on our social media accounts.

#MellowMonday: Lana Del Rey – ‘Once Upon A Dream’

Hello everyone and welcome to Muzik Speaks’ Disney Week!

Malficent

To kick things off I have chosen Lana Del Rey’s cover of ‘Once Upon A Dream’ from Maleficent.

The original song comes from Sleeping Beauty (1959), and Lana Del Rey’s new cover from Maleficent (2014).

The newer film serves as a prequel for the 1959 film, showing the story of sleeping beauty through the perspective of the antagonist, Maleficent. Both films are amazing, probably because they’re both made by Disney!

The main actress, Angelina Jolie specifically chose Lana Del Rey to perform this song and I’m glad she did; it’s a perfect choice!

I love her adaptation, she brings some modern vibes to it without loosing out on the overall sentimentality of the original. The production of this track is just as amazing, you can hear a subtle effect on the vocals. Which just goes to show how much attention there was to detail!

I really like this track, it’s probably one of my favourite modern Disney songs. Are you a fan of these twists on old films?

Keep posted to read about more Disney tracks this week and share with you friends!
