#EventSpeaks: Tom Walker @ Green Door Store, Brighton – 28/11/17

Fresh after being added to the Longlist of BBC Music’s Sound of 2018, Tom Walker came to Brighton on the penultimate date of his UK tour. He was supported by up-and-comers, Tors, at The Green Door Store, on Tuesday 28th November 2017 and it was not a night to be missed!

Tors

This band were incredibly exciting – a trio of brothers, born in Brighton and living between London and Devon, they had a very polished sound!

The vocal harmonies the brothers used were remarkably tight and it’s clear that they have worked hard to Perfect this.

The songs themselves were well written and their on-stage presence and chemistry was excellent (I guess being brothers helps). The best way to describe their sound is ‘warm’ – it gives you a great feeling just to hear their beautiful melodies and intricate instrumentation. Definitely check out their music online and catch them live if you get the chance.

Highlight: It was amazing just how full the trio’s sound was, using just 3 guitars, sample pads and a few live drums – I particularly enjoyed the combination of sample pads and live drums.

Tom Walker

It is without a doubt that Tom Walker has already built himself up a very loyal following, which was evidenced by the fact that the show was a sell-out and virtually everyone in the place was singing along to every word.

I have to admit that I myself didn’t know too many of his songs prior to going and those that I did know, were along the more mellow lines but I was (pleasantly) surprised to find that his set was packed with quite a few intense, rock-fuelled tunes and some rather insane guitar solos too! The audience were revelling in his heavier songs, skanking out like crazy, whilst his mellower efforts provided an opportunity for the crowd to flex their vocal muscles.

One thing is for certain; this event was definitely something special – it truly felt like we were witnessing the beginning of this guy becoming a big household name and I have to agree with the BBC; I predict big things for him in 2018 – I can’t wait to see what next year holds for this talented artist!

Highlights:

  • The perfection of the set was immense – it was incredible to see how just three people could create such a full and all-encompassing sound.
  • ‘Angels’ was something really special – I reckon this could be a massive, hit single for him – you need to see this live! You could tell that this song gives Tom a buzz too as he was grinning from ear to ear after performing it.
  • Tom got the crowd to shout back, “Fuck it,” during his performance of ‘Rapture’ and the sheer intensity of the crowd’s enjoyment at doing this was a marvel to behold.
  • Whilst the stage at Green Door Store is relatively small, Tom and his band sure made the best of it and I loved the use of his lighting tubes to bring a bit of diversity to the visuals.
  • The bassist’s facial expressions were hysterical – I couldn’t tell whether he’d smelt something unpleasant but was sadistically enjoying it, or he was just lost in the moment, but it sure had some of the crowd amused. Jokes aside, a great musician!
  • The amalgamation of backing tracks and sample pads as well as the live instruments was sensational – kudos to the drummer for his use of the sample pads and blending it with the drums.
  • Straight after the show, Tom took the time to chat to his fans and take photos with them outside the venue – he seemed like a really genuine guy, who was grateful for everyone’s support. It was out here that I heard him mention his debut album would be quite a bit heavier than some of the previous songs he’s released – this was reflected in his live set but I left the show with a real excitement to hear it!

#MellowMonday: Miley Cyrus – ‘Inspired’

I absolutely love Miley Cyrus‘ voice – it’s so raspy and powerful – it’s truly unique!

After a couple of years out of the limelight, she has finally returned, first with Malibu‘ and now ‘Inspired’ (Surely this signifies a new album in the pipeline?) The song is full of honesty and a heartfelt message to make a change to the world and its environment; it’s a stunning track.

‘Inspired’ first debuted in the UK, at Ariana Grande‘s benefit concert, One Love Manchester, with an honest, emotional, acoustic performance (see below). Since then, she’s gone on to release the track but no official video has emerged yet; we’ll update you when one does.

What are your thoughts of Miley’s latest tune? Got a #MellowMonday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#MellowMonday: Mumford & Sons – ‘Timshel’

I love Mumford & Sons; their folky sound is so unique and refreshing in today’s saturated pop market.

That said, I also felt that I had to feature this stunning track today in honour of Marcus Mumford‘s incredible performance of it, to open last night’s One Love Manchester benefit concert, in aid of the horrendous attack in Manchester.

Although you probably saw his solo performance last night, I found this remarkable live performance with the full band, in a Melbourne side alley – it captures their harmonies to perfection.

What are your thoughts of this beautifully melodic track? Did this strike a chord with you at last night’s ‘One Love Manchester’ concert? Got a #MellowMonday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#Two4Tunesday: Charlie Puth – ‘Attention’ & Yes Lad – ‘Walk Away’

Charlie Puth – ‘Attention’

Charlie Puth has been going from strength to strength and whilst I wasn’t a fan of his big hit, ‘Marvin Gaye’, I loved his collaboration with Selena Gomez on We Don’t Talk Any More. Since then, it appears the singer songwriter is gearing up to release a new album with brand new single, ‘Attention’ leading the way.

The song is catchy and I love the way the percussion builds up throughout the track – the bass line is funky and his vocals are great (even if auto tune has been used evidently). A great single and a surefire sign of great things to come.

The music video is steamy and features Puth in a tumultuous relationship, breaking up with glass flying before kissing and making up and starting the cycle all over again. Check it out below.

Yes Lad – ‘Walk Away’

Yes Lad are a five-piece boyband who emerged on the scene after their appearances on X Factor UK.

The electro-pop song is tinged with urban sounds and makes for a fantastic debut single from the band. ‘Walk Away’ is catchy, and follows the current trend of having sampled vocals over the chorus but it’s unique in it’s own way – an impressive debut, looking forward to seeing what the boys release next.

The music video for the track, was filmed in Manchester and features the band performing the track, and showing off some impressive dance moves.

‘Walk Away’ can also be downloaded from iTunes now! – https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/walk-away/id1210428767?i=1210429183

#Review: Will Joseph Cook – Sweet Dreamer

Will Joseph Cook is a Kent-born singer songwriter who’s been hard at work crafting his sound, supporting on several tours and then in October 2016, embarked on a headline tour. Since then, we had a chat with him about what he’s been up to recently (check out the latest interview) and he’s put the finishing touches to his debut album. This is, Sweet Dreamer.

Will Joseph Cook - Sweet Dreamer

The album kicks off with the chilled sing-along track, ‘Biggest Fan’ with it’s slightly country-tinted guitar twangs, making for the perfect way to open this rather cinematic record. It leads perfectly on to one of Will‘s biggest hits, ‘Sweet Dreamer’; a funky song with incredible production and subtle sounds, topped off with sugar-coated, sombre lyrics; an oxymoron to the all-round uplifting sound of the track.

The record flows incredibly through a whole heap of diverse songs; from indie pop belters to almost club-like anthems, it’s packed with songs that just have to be danced and sung along to. The singer-songwriter also prides himself on his use of imagery to accompany his songs (in the form of well-crafted music videos) but this album also takes you on a journey – each song is able to conjure up images in the mind that could well make for a video – I’m sure that if he had the time, he’d could easily produce videos for each and every song, but that’s because each song on the album feels like it could be a single in its own right.

A forward-thinking, credible pop record, crammed full of diversity, for all the cool kids to revel in. A true modern masterpiece.

Stand-out tracks have to be ‘Treat Me Like A Lover’ and ‘Plastic’ – both have thumping beats that are guaranteed to have you coming back for more; particularly the latter. ‘Plastic’ is tinged with steel drum sounds and massively euphoric vocals that make me certain this huge banger will be a massive hit this summer. As well as some of his other singles, ‘Take Me Dancing’ and ‘Girls Like Me’, which are both awesome, another incredible song is ‘Alive’ – it feels like the song blends many genres and the falsetto vocals are truly captivating. Lastly, both ‘Hands’ and ‘Habit’ are very different songs to the rest of the album; especially ‘Hands’ – it’s a very raw, honest and truthful track that seems almost like a break from the rest of the album.

The production throughout the album is incredible – it comes together amazingly as a cohesive body of work – it’s genre-blending, exciting, playful and all-consuming (in a good way)!

It is undoubtable that this album will be the soundtrack to many people’s summers this year; it’s fun-filled, indie pop that is bursting at the seems with summery vibes, catchy choruses and intelligent lyrics. A forward-thinking, credible pop record, crammed full of diversity, for all the cool kids to revel in. A true modern masterpiece. I can’t get enough of it, and you won’t be able to either.

Will is also off on a UK tour in May, in support of the album. He kicks off the tour at Stereo in Glasgow on 2nd May before travelling to Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Cardiff, Bristol and London. He concludes the tour at The Bullingdon in Oxford on 12th May before heading to several places in Europe. Be sure to check out a date near you – he puts on an amazing show (Check out our review)!

It was only just over a week ago that I got the opportunity to interview Joe Ragosta from Patent Pending and now we’re back; this time for another interview with Race The Horizon (previously known as The Mend – notable for their time on Britain’s Got Talent)

The group have recently changed their name, recorded a cover of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me A River’ and now they’re in America hoping to meet some producers and maybe even look at signing some contracts.

The boys are enthusiastic about their upcoming adventures but were sceptical of playing ‘Would You Rather…?’ – and they should’ve been!

I hope you enjoy this interview and please go ahead and share the link on your social media accounts!

#MuzikSpeaks: An Interview with Platnum

Aaron Evers and Michelle McKenna from Platnum took the time to do a Skype interview with us, and they were awesome!

We’re back with another interview, and this time, it’s with Platnum.

Having taken a short break from music, they’re back, as a duo, and getting ready to tour in January 2016.

The pair (who rose to fame in 2008, with their H “Two” O collaboration, ‘What’s It Gonna Be’) have been taking some time to work on new music. Their first garage/bassline anthem became huge and having spoken to them, they inform me that their new music will see a return to their musical roots, while still remaining commercial.

I had such an amazing time interviewing Aaron and Michelle – they were a real laugh and so nice!

Continuing from the tradition set in our previous ZebraheadFrankmusik and Life Of Dillon interviews, we asked Platnum to take part in a game of ‘Would You Rather…?’ – however, Aaron decided they should throw themselves straight into the WTF?! (#WYRwtf) level…brave!

I really hope that you will enjoy watching this interview as I had a great time talking to them and please, please go ahead and share this link and video on your social media accounts!
