#MuzikSpeaks: An Interview with Natalie McCool

We recently had the opportunity to catch up with the amazing singer/songwriter, Natalie McCool, about how she’s found releasing her album The Great Unknown, through Pledge Music, what really grinds her gears, her most embarrassing moment and much more. What a lovely lass for taking the time to talk to us! Here’s what she had to say…

1. What’s it been like writing and recording your album, The Great Unknown? How was the experience of launching it through Pledge Music?
Recording and being in the studio is my favourite part of the whole process. I recorded the album in two parts – 5 tracks each time. I was initially going to do an EP but then decided to do an album. The track which inspired this album is ‘Oh Danger’, one of the first tracks I wrote which I have been toying with for a few years now and which I finally made a home for on The Great Unknown – and I think the rest of the tracks really fit around that. Launching the album through PledgeMusic was fantastic – that level of connection with fans is amazing. Everyone supported the album so much and when I sent it out to all the pledgers before the tour I got an overwhelming response – everyone absolutely loved it!

2. What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you, either through your music career, or in life?
That’s a hard one. Obviously there are lots of things but thinking of THE WORST is hard. One of the worst was me and my friend wrote a love letter to a boy at school which we never meant for him to read – it was hilarious. But then he found it in her folder and read it out loud to the whole class!! We actually died. Looking back though it was so funny. Comedy history.

3. What really grinds your gears?
Rude people!!! And people who clearly hate their job and take it out on everyone else. No need for that! Also aggressive drivers. You people make the world suck!

4. Is there anything other than music you’re really passionate about?
Yeah I love art and history, I love going to see different types of art – my favourite is pop art & conceptual art. Whenever I go to a new city I always have to go to the art galleries and museums. I love history too – visiting historical locations and places where huge events have taken place, I think everyone should do those things whenever they get the chance, that’s how we learn!

5. What music have you been listening to most recently? Have you got a favourite song right now?
Favourite song right now? Probably Ariana Grande’s Into You. Such a great song and brilliant production too!

6. Has anything really scary ever happened to you on tour? If so, what?
Probably staying in dodgy hotels!! We stayed at a really dodgy one in Nottingham – it was like the Overlook Hotel from the Shining but totally not as glamorous. We walked into the hotel and were just like…yeah lets go out in Nottingham so we don’t have to spend any more time here than necessary!!!

7. Have you got any disgusting habits?
Probably biting my fingernails. It drives my mum mad. But I play guitar so don’t like having long fingernails. So at least it’s a useful habit.

8. What is your usual process for writing and recording? And where do you take your inspirations for songs from?
My new album is about challenging yourself and about self discovery. There are songs on it which deal with issues I’ve had in my life – common issues that affect everyone at least once – but very personal to me. It’s about making peace with that. I normally write about my own relationships with other people and the relationship between my conscious mind and unconscious mind. It’s a fascinating thing to write about.

9. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Just enjoy yourself. Whatever happens in life you only get one life – make the most out of it and make sure you enjoy it.

10. Would you rather live in a Disney or Looney Tunes universe and why?
Looney Tunes DEFINITELY. Anything can happen. Also you can get hit by a bus or have a piano drop on your head – and still be alive!

Singer/songwriter, Tom Ryder, has most recently released his EP, Strings Attached which has been gathering a lot of interest, even from the likes of Chris Evans and Rod Stewart!

During our interview, Tom explained that he is focusing on releasing singles and EPs, rather than an album right now. He told us about the music he’s been listening to most recently and some of his upcoming plans.

As with most of our interviews, we played a game of ‘Would You Rather…?’, though I didn’t push him too far with this…he’s just too nice for that awful game!

I hope you enjoy this interview and please go ahead and show your support by sharing the link on your social media accounts!

Muzik Speaks: 2015 in Review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for our blog – it’s got some interesting information about our statistics for the year – take a look, if you’re interested.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 3,500 times in 2015. If it were a cable car, it would take about 58 trips to carry that many people.

#Playlist: July 2015

Bienvenido ‘Speakerz’!

It’s time for July’s monthly YouTube and Spotify playlist!

This month, we’ve brought you new music from Janet Jackson, Chris Brown, John Newman and Flo Rida, we’ve made your Fridays even happier with Andy Grammer, Mark Ronson and St Lucia and we even had a special Disney-themed week, with songs from Toy Story, The Lion King, Peter Pan and Beauty and the Beast. There’s even been some unique tracks from the likes of Vindata, Mi’das, Conrad Sewell, Trevor Guthrie and Echosmith.

We really hope that you enjoy the songs we’ve brought you throughout July 2015’s posts, as much as we’ve enjoyed sharing them! – Our apologies if any of the tracks are missing from the Spotify playlist – some of them may not have been released yet or some may have been removed from Spotify by the artist/band.

Note: You can view the whole YouTube playlist by using the dropdown menu at the top corner of the video, or skip a song using the ‘next’ button.

NEXT MONTH:

Next month, we’re hoping to secure another Skype interview and of course we’ll be bringing you many more epic tunes!

*** Read our latest interview with Frankmusik (2017) – here! ***

I can’t believe that only 4 months in, we’ve already done our second interview and this one is with none other than the incredibly talented Frankmusik! Vincent Turner (aka Frankmusik) came onto the scene back in 2009 with the release of his debut album, ‘Complete Me’ and has since gone it alone, releasing a further 3 albums!

Since his last release, ‘By Nicole’, in 2014, Frankmusik has been working on the release of a follow-up album. I have had the immense privilege of hearing 4 demos for this upcoming album and I can tell you that there are some real corkers there already! It’s a definite return to his former ‘Complete Me’ days but with a new air of maturity about it. I’m very excited about this upcoming release, ‘Not Right Now’.

Vincent was a real pleasure to chat to; he’s often known for his honesty with fans (in his updates) and his sense of humour and honesty came through perfectly, in person, during our interview.

Continuing from the tradition set in our Zebrahead interview, we asked Frankmusik to take part in a game of ‘Would You Rather…?’ with 3 different levels; #WYRtame, #WYRawkward and #WYRwtf.

I really hope you’ll enjoy this interview as much as I did filming it and please, please share this video on your social media accounts!

#MellowMonday: You+Me – ‘Unbeliever’

You+Me Banner

This song is beautiful; in fact this duo sound beautiful! Their album is stunning too!

In case you haven’t heard of them, You+Me are comprised of two sensational singers; P!nk (Alecia Moore) and Dallas Green (AKA ‘City & Colour’ and singer of post-hardcore band ‘Alexisonfire’). The project came about when the two met through mutual friends. They sang together on various tours, just as friends, until one day their schedules opened up and they got together to compose some original songs.

This song hasn’t actually been released from the album, however it’s such a beautiful song, it needs to be shared. The video below is a live performance of the song, but it sounds pretty true to the album track. I also love the way Pink messes up – it’s endearing.

Please share the link to this song as it deserves to be heard by many! What #MellowMonday track are you listening to today? Leave a comment below.

*SPECIAL* #FeelGoodFriday: Avril Lavigne – ‘Fly’

Avril Lavigne Banner

I realise that this is the second #FeelGoodFriday post of today, but I felt that this one is ‘feel-good’ for a different reason and wanted to post about it as it’s just been released on iTunes and YouTube. Instead of the song itself being a catchy, feel-good anthem, the reason behind the track and watching the video, is what makes me feel elated.

Having spent some time out of the public eye, whilst battling Lyme Disease, Avril Lavigne has released her first track since 2013, ‘Fly’. It is dedicated to the Special Olympics, taking place in Los Angeles (2015).

Proceeds from the single’s sales will go towards supporting the Special Olympics, so please head over to the link below and get your copy from iTunes; we have 🙂

What do you think of the song? What about the video? Please share this link with others.

#Two4Tunesday: Conor Maynard – ‘Talking About’ & Marlon Roudette – ‘When The Beat Drops Out’

We’ve got two new songs for you this week; one which is already doing well in the charts and one song which will be released in the next few weeks – and I’m predicting big things for it!

Conor Maynard Banner

Conor Maynard’s latest song, ‘Talking About’ sees the return of the YouTube success-story, with this 90s garage-inspired pop song. I have to say, the tune itself does sound a bit like a remix, rather than an actual release, however I think this works and for that reason, makes it an interesting song; it will surely be another hit under his belt! ‘Talking About’ is released 19th April 2015.

Conor Maynard – ‘Talking About’

Marlon Roudette Banner

The second song I’m loving now is a slightly more chilled offering from Marlon Roudette. ‘When The Beat Drops Out’ has a subtle quality to it, with the use of steel drums, giving it a unique identity. Whilst it’s not the most obvious pop song, it managed to peak inside the Top 10 and that’s got to be down to it’s individuality.

Happy Two4Tunesday peeps! Which 2 songs will you choose to share?

#FeelGoodFriday: Jus Now featuring Blaxx – ‘Leh Go’

SONY DSC

Oh my days, this song! I discovered this song on the radio, about 6 months ago and just came across it again today! It instantly puts me in the best mood and just makes me want to dance. I defy anyone not to find the carnival-style rhythm of this song, make them want to dance and sing along. Bring it on, with the volume to the max!

What’s giving you that Friday feeling? Does this song make you ‘Feel Good’? Please reply to this post and share it with your friends.

#WildCardWednesday: Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox – ‘Fancy’

Scott Bradlee - Banner

Well, where to start with this song; Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox are well-known YouTube stars. They take modern pop songs and put a vintage spin on them. This particular track (originally by Iggy Azalea & Charli XCX) is done in a vintage 1920s flapper style; it truly has made the track more interesting and given it very unique twist. I really hope you enjoy this.

This week’s Wild-Card has been a cover, with a twist. Are you listening to something similar? Please reply with your Wild-Card.
