Muzik Speaks Loves Hopeless Records - SmallerThe Dangerous Summer are a rock band from Maryland, USA who formed back in 2006.

The band released 3 studio albums before parting ways in 2014. However, since reforming in 2017, and releasing their fourth, self-titled album (The Dangerous Summer), the band are now unleashing their fifth studio album to the world, Mother Nature. Here are our thoughts on the record…

The Dangerous Summer - Mother Nature.jpg

This feels very much like the album that should have arrived in 2018 to mark the band’s resurrection, because this album is pretty sublime. It’s a unique brand of melodic and mature emo-esque rock that isn’t afraid to talk about feelings in a direct way.

It opens with ‘Prologue’ a track led with a positive voice message from a female, letting the recipient know that she’s there for them. It’s actually a nice, uplifting message that somehow manages to feel personal to us, the listener. Pretty quickly, we’re then catapulted seamlessly into ‘Blind Ambition’, a track with a pretty amazing guitar line that somehow feels forcefully positive, to the point it gives me goosebumps.

There is something quite beautifully simplistic about the way difficult, even tumultuous events in our own lives can be compared to the unstoppable forces of Mother Nature, at times, leaving us weak and powerless – it’s truly poetic. This is displayed with wonderful imagery on tracks such as ‘Virginia’ and ‘Bring Me Back To Life’ with powerful lyrics like “I must be weak, if you couldn’t tell, I couldn’t breathe, bring me back to life now, bring me back to peace, give me back the sun now, can you give it back to me?”

It’s not quite a concept album, yet at the same time kind of is; whatever it is, it works…really well!

‘Mother Nature’ itself is a track that really encapsulates the tone of the record. It’s a song about having hope, accepting changes we face in life and being bold enough to embrace changes within ourself. Perdomo successfully evokes powerful imagery of mother earth and nature, and sells his own willingness to become a part of it.

Equally, the album’s lead single, ‘Where Were You When The Sky Opened Up’, has an apocalyptic feel to it, describing facing demons head-on and attempting to mature.

Other tracks to pay attention to include: ‘Starting Over / Slow Down’ a track of two halves – the first half is slow and melodic with vocals that cross over each other, whilst the second half is more synth-driven and up tempo with an amazing, all-consuming, drum ending. ‘It Is Real’ see Perdomo sing of drug-taking and trying to understand the world with a deep sense of nostalgia. The metronome sound throughout is pretty cool too. ‘Better Light’ has this amazing vocoder-esque intro that sounds somewhat like an Imogen Heap track that builds with soaring falsetto vocals – it’s very euphoric and ethereal. Lastly, there’s ‘Consequence Of Living’, an almost a positive look back at the end of your life and being able to observe how you lived your life.

One major thing that can’t go unnoticed is AJ Perdomo‘s sensational vocals throughout the album! He delivers emotion with utter sincerity from incredible falsetto to aching melancholy with some seriously angst-ridden screams on the likes of ‘Way Down’ – an angry, heavy rock song about dark thoughts; possibly one of the best tracks on the record?!

Mother Nature is an exciting return for the band – it feels like they’ve found a sound and style that works for them. It’s not quite a concept album, yet at the same time kind of is; whatever it is, it works…really well! I defy people not to find themselves drawn to this record time and again to indulge on its honesty to reflect on life’s big events. There’s a real feeling of excitement I get from listening to this album and I can’t wait to see what the band do next!

#MuzikSpeaks: An Interview with Life Of Dillon (2017)

The Life Of Dillon boys took the time to catch up with Matt again and chat about their latest single, ‘Sex For Breakfast’, their plans to continually keep releasing music and how they came to be a duo now. It’s all below…

It’s been a while since our first interview with Life Of Dillon, but the boys took the time to catch up with us again and fill us in with all the things they’ve been up to since we last spoke.

They’ve released two new tracks, Sex For Breakfast‘ and Rocks‘ and talked about their plans to continually keep releasing new music; who they’d like to collaborate with and how they came to be a duo now. It’s all here…

What have you been up to since our last interview with you?
It’s hard to keep track. We’re always making music. That’s #1. We write, produce and record almost everything in our home studio… but beyond that we’ve been focusing on our music videos. We are heavily involved in the creation and direction, and have been wearing many different hats over the last couple years in order to get our vision across. – Joe

We loved your first EP, Prologue, and now your new single ‘Sex For Breakfast’ is blowing up, but what everyone is dying to know is, is there more new music in the pipeline? If so, when can we expect it?
We have tons of music. It doesn’t take David and I that long to write songs. A lot of the greatest ideas come from real life experiences or are at least inspired by them… so when you are inspired they just pour out of you. The production of the songs usually takes a little longer, we’re perfectionists so we like to make sure its right. But to answer your question… yes! We have more music coming out next month and will be putting songs out on the regular… We took a little break after our EP came out because we wanted to take some time to grow musically. Things happened so quickly with the last launch that it was all a little overwhelming and we got lost in a whirl wind of events. Coming from our home in London making music to traveling the world playing to crowds of 15k+ was a trip to say the least. Now we’re much more comfortable in our surroundings and we’re ready to share the songs we’ve been working on for the last couple years. – Joe

Will there be an album in 2017? If so, any ideas of a name yet?
We are not concerned with albums. It’s really just music… and we are putting them out song by song. When it feels right, we’ll focus on an album. But for the time being, we’re happy to share as much of our music as we can. – David

Have you got to write/record with anyone cool?
Joe and I write/record/produce pretty much everything by ourselves, but we did do this one random session like 6 years ago with Diana Ross’ son, Evan. Joe’s brother was a producer signed to SonyATV and he had a session booked with him, and because the session was in our house, Joe and I sorta jumped in unannounced and we wrote a song together! We recently linked up out here in LA and are looking to collab on some more music together with Evan and his wife Ashlee Simpson. Another cool dude we’ve been writing with recently is this kid AJ Mitchell. Super down to earth guy and has pipes for days! – David

It appears that there’s just the two of you now, how are you finding being a duo?
Truth be told, not too much has changed. My brother, Robert, still works with us. But just on other projects now. We have all always made music together. We did this for years and when we got signed, David and I were living in a separate house to Robert… He was actually in another band, but we decided to do things together because we’re family. Being a an artist takes a lot of focus and dedication, which can take you away from the things you love; the writing, being in the studio, friends, family. When we got off tour, we all spoke about it and decided to split mutually. My brother is in the studio now, working on his own sound and making music that really lets his talent as a producer shine. David and I are just doing what we’ve always done. – Joe

If you could collaborate with any band or artist, who would it be and why?
I don’t really watch too many artists. I’m so focussed on my own writing that I don’t really listen to a lot of other people often. Though we were asked this question the other day and I said I’m a straight up fan of Chance the Rapper. I love his flow, his voice and his message. I’d really like to work with a rapper, I think it would bring a cool dynamic to what we do. – Joe
Big John Mayer fan, his songs are on point…jamming with him in the studio would be dope! – David

If a film were to be made about your lives, who would you want to play you and why?
Denzel Washington. He’s just a cool Motherfucker. – Joe
Leonardo DiCaprio. Have you seen ‘The Revenant’? The guy wrestles a bear!! – David

Are there any plans to tour the UK soon?
We have a few things lining up, but we can’t reveal anything yet. We will be playing local venues in LA so keep up with us to see where those will be! – David

Thanks again to the Life Of Dillon boys for taking the time to catch up with us and allow us to do another interview with them.

As you probably already gathered, we’re huge fans of Life Of Dillon and their brand of acoustic house blended with pop and cool, unique banjo sounds.

Their latest single, Sex For Breakfast, was a big hit with fans and this song looks set to be a big hit too! This single sees the duo return to a similar style found on their debut EP, Prologue, and is sure to capture people’s attention, just as much as their debut single, Overload.

No music video has been released yet but hopefully something will be posted soon; we’ll keep you updated on this!

Check out our interview with the band too!

#MuzikSpeaks: An Interview with Life Of Dillon (2015)

So, here we are with another interview; this time with the incredible acoustic house trio Life Of Dillon!

Having released their debut single, Overload, earlier this year, the band look set for great things, with their album due out later in the year.

The guys were a real pleasure to chat to; they were down-to-earth, genuine and kind. They showed not only an interest in the questions but even turned some of them on me, which was brilliant!

Continuing from the tradition set in our previous Zebrahead and Frankmusik interviews, we asked Life Of Dillon to take part in a game of ‘Would You Rather…?’ with 3 different, usual levels; Tame (#WYRtame), Awkward (#WYRawkward) and WTF?! (#WYRwtf).

I hope that you guys will have as much fun watching this interview as I did filming it and please, please share this video on your social media accounts!
