Years & Years is the now solo project from singer and songwriter, Olly Alexander. It originally started out as a band back in 2010, who found great success with two remarkable pop albums before Alexander decided to continue the project as a solo venture in 2021. Now, 2022 sees the release of Years & Years‘ third album (and first as a solo project), Night Call. Here’s what we have to say about it…

Years & Years - Night Call

The album launches perfectly with the funky-bass driven, ‘Consequences’ that aptly repeats the track title with a quirky robotic vocal. It’s an upbeat track which opens the album up in the way it means to go on.

From start to finish, Night Call is an album packed with massive, electro-pop tracks that has a wonderful diversity to its sound. From massive pop singles, like ‘Starstruck’ and the club anthem, ‘Sweet Talker’, with Galantis, to more ethereal and oddly satisfying tracks like ‘Strange And Unusual’, there’s a bit of something for everyone.

There are a couple of pretty sexy tracks on the record, including ‘Intimacy’ which is sexy in both lyrical content and the beat too and ‘Muscle’ with its rumbling bass notes underpinned by a shuffling drum beat. Both songs are growers and could be overlooked but on second and third listens, have a lot to offer to the diversity of the record.

This is undoubtedly a major pop record through and through… this is the new Years & Years.

Title track, ‘Night Call’ is a fun, upbeat song with a cool, telephone dial tone used throughout whilst hit single, ‘Crave’, sees club beats meeting drawn-out and altogether hypnotic vocals.

Some of the best tracks on the album include, ’20 Minutes’ with its falsetto, dreamy vocals atop a modest beat (probably my favourite track on the record), ‘Make It Out Alive’ which has catchy chorus vocals on top of shimmering synths and ‘Immaculate’ a superb, Arabian-esque sounding song, complete with funky guitars and a truly danceable chorus. It’s easy to get lost in these tracks, with their wonderful production quirks and interesting styles.

‘Reflection’ is an unusual close to the album, it has an eerie-sounding beat with some funky aspects to it and the vocals sound different than usual too. It’s not a typical Years & Years song and whilst it’s possibly not the best close to the album, it’s still a good song nonetheless.

This is undoubtedly a major pop record through and through and whilst it’s not quite the same style as the old Years & Years records, it’s an amazing first solo effort from the singer/songwriter. It shows just how much he’s developed as an artist and clearly demonstrates that he has what it takes to stay relevant and one of pop’s biggest hitters.

This is the new Years & Years and I can’t wait to hear what he has to release next.

#Two4Tunesday: Charlie Puth – ‘Attention’ & Yes Lad – ‘Walk Away’

Charlie Puth – ‘Attention’

Charlie Puth has been going from strength to strength and whilst I wasn’t a fan of his big hit,¬†‘Marvin Gaye’, I loved his collaboration with¬†Selena Gomez¬†on¬†We Don’t Talk Any More. Since then, it appears the singer songwriter is gearing up to release a new album with brand new single, ‘Attention’¬†leading the way.

The song is catchy and I love the way the percussion builds up throughout the track – the bass line is funky and his vocals are great (even if auto tune has been used evidently). A great single and a surefire sign of great things to come.

The music video is steamy and features Puth in a tumultuous relationship, breaking up with glass flying before kissing and making up and starting the cycle all over again. Check it out below.

Yes Lad – ‘Walk Away’

Yes Lad are a five-piece boyband who emerged on the scene after their appearances on X Factor UK.

The electro-pop song is tinged with urban sounds and makes for a fantastic debut single from the band.¬†‘Walk Away’ is catchy, and follows the current trend of having sampled vocals over the chorus but it’s unique in it’s own way – an impressive debut, looking forward to seeing what the boys release next.

The music video for the track, was filmed in Manchester and features the band performing the track, and showing off some impressive dance moves.

Major Lazer – ‘Cold Water’ featuring Justin Bieber & M√ė

Once again,¬†Major Lazer have teamed up with previous collaborators,¬†Justin Bieber¬†and¬†M√ė¬†to create a new, surefire hit, in the form of¬†‘Cold Water’.

‘Cold Water’ was penned by¬†Benny Blanco¬†and¬†Ed Sheeran among others and features two awesome vocalists. It has major influences from the tropical house genre, as well as some dance style to it too. It’s a very vibrant song and sure to be a hit this summer, probably similarly to their previous smash hit,¬†‘Lean On’.

What are your thoughts on this new Major Lazer song?

Charlie Puth – ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ featuring Selena Gomez

Charlie Puth rose to fame mainly after his feature on the¬†Wiz Khalifa¬†track,¬†See You Again. Since then, he’s had a string of hits and most recently he released¬†‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ from his debut album,¬†Nine Track Mind.

This song is also tropical house in style with influences of dance – it’s actually beautifully crafted – the duet vocals sit nicely on top of the house beat and remain relaxed yet catchy in their feel. Although it hasn’t done amazingly in the charts, it caught my attention when I heard¬†Nick Grimshaw¬†play it on Radio 1 recently!

No official video has been released but I’ve included a live version as well as a YouTube audio video. *UPDATE* An official video has now been released – it’s really interesting with the split screen but it’s a shame he didn’t get¬†Selena Gomez¬†in it too.

Have you checked out this track yet? What are your opinions of it?

#FeelGoodFriday: Wiz Khalifa – ‘See You Again’ featuring Charlie Puth

Wiz Khalifa Banner

This song means an awful lot to me right now; as a teacher I strive to make a difference in children’s lives each and every day and I was honoured to have this song sung to me (as a complete surprise!) by 4 of the most amazing students that I had the privilege of teaching last year; they surprised me with their performance on their last day at the school this year! Needless to say, it was emotional and a real privilege; it made me feel like I had truly made a difference even in just a few lives!

This song is known for its connection to Paul Walker, who tragically died during the filming of¬†Fast and Furious 7¬†but it has taken on a new meaning for me…that’s the¬†true¬†power of music!

Whilst the message and intent behind the song is about a sad occasion, it also is feel-good, as it’s looking for the positives in a sad situation and for that reason, it’s my¬†#FeelGoodFriday song of choice this week.

Does this song have an emotional attachment for you? Have you got any similar feel-good songs? Please comment below.
