#EventSpeaks: Tom Walker @ Green Door Store, Brighton – 28/11/17

facebook-likeInstagram

Fresh after being added to the Longlist of BBC Music’s Sound of 2018, Tom Walker came to Brighton on the penultimate date of his UK tour. He was supported by up-and-comers, Tors, at The Green Door Store, on Tuesday 28th November 2017 and it was not a night to be missed!

Tors

This band were incredibly exciting – a trio of brothers, born in Brighton and living between London and Devon, they had a very polished sound!

The vocal harmonies the brothers used were remarkably tight and it’s clear that they have worked hard to Perfect this.

The songs themselves were well written and their on-stage presence and chemistry was excellent (I guess being brothers helps). The best way to describe their sound is ‘warm’ – it gives you a great feeling just to hear their beautiful melodies and intricate instrumentation. Definitely check out their music online and catch them live if you get the chance.

Highlight: It was amazing just how full the trio’s sound was, using just 3 guitars, sample pads and a few live drums – I particularly enjoyed the combination of sample pads and live drums.

Tom Walker

It is without a doubt that Tom Walker has already built himself up a very loyal following, which was evidenced by the fact that the show was a sell-out and virtually everyone in the place was singing along to every word.

I have to admit that I myself didn’t know too many of his songs prior to going and those that I did know, were along the more mellow lines but I was (pleasantly) surprised to find that his set was packed with quite a few intense, rock-fuelled tunes and some rather insane guitar solos too! The audience were revelling in his heavier songs, skanking out like crazy, whilst his mellower efforts provided an opportunity for the crowd to flex their vocal muscles.

One thing is for certain; this event was definitely something special – it truly felt like we were witnessing the beginning of this guy becoming a big household name and I have to agree with the BBC; I predict big things for him in 2018 – I can’t wait to see what next year holds for this talented artist!

Highlights:

  • The perfection of the set was immense – it was incredible to see how just three people could create such a full and all-encompassing sound.
  • ‘Angels’ was something really special – I reckon this could be a massive, hit single for him – you need to see this live! You could tell that this song gives Tom a buzz too as he was grinning from ear to ear after performing it.
  • Tom got the crowd to shout back, “Fuck it,” during his performance of ‘Rapture’ and the sheer intensity of the crowd’s enjoyment at doing this was a marvel to behold.
  • Whilst the stage at Green Door Store is relatively small, Tom and his band sure made the best of it and I loved the use of his lighting tubes to bring a bit of diversity to the visuals.
  • The bassist’s facial expressions were hysterical – I couldn’t tell whether he’d smelt something unpleasant but was sadistically enjoying it, or he was just lost in the moment, but it sure had some of the crowd amused. Jokes aside, a great musician!
  • The amalgamation of backing tracks and sample pads as well as the live instruments was sensational – kudos to the drummer for his use of the sample pads and blending it with the drums.
  • Straight after the show, Tom took the time to chat to his fans and take photos with them outside the venue – he seemed like a really genuine guy, who was grateful for everyone’s support. It was out here that I heard him mention his debut album would be quite a bit heavier than some of the previous songs he’s released – this was reflected in his live set but I left the show with a real excitement to hear it!

Lewis Capaldi is a fantastic up-and-coming singer songwriter, hailing from Scotland. He is currently making huge waves on the music scene, with his debut tune having already hit over 20 million streams on Spotify and what’s more, his ticket sales are absolutely on fire!

One of his latest tunes, ‘Fade’, is a real beauty and is the opening track on his debut EP, Bloom.

What I love about this track is that his vocals are mature and sultry and somehow filled with a wisdom that’s beyond his years. This guy is set to become one of the next big house-hold names with a voice and style that sits somewhere between Tom Odell and James Arthur. This guy is truly an exciting talent – make sure you check him out live soon before he’s selling out arenas.

No official video has been released yet, but we’ll keep you posted as always.

#MellowMonday: Frida Sundemo – ‘Gold’

Swedish songstress Frida Sundemo has released her brand new single, ‘Gold’, ahead of her highly anticipated international debut album, Flashbacks & Futures, due out on 6th October.

This track is a soaring, cinematic masterpiece with its rousing synths, beautiful otherworldly flourishes and Frida‘s sweet-as-honey vocals. This track had me hooked from the very first line, “Take a deep breath.” It’s genuinely a song that feels like a short film and takes you on a journey, like no other song I’ve heard.

Regarding the single, Frida says, “‘Gold’ is about being brave and embracing the beauty of life. It’s about having the courage to risk something that’s ”alright” for the chances of getting something you really dream about.”

No music video has been released as yet, but we’ll keep you posted. The audio can be heard below though.

#ThrowbackThursday: Darren Hayes – ‘On The Verge Of Something Wonderful’

It’s been a decade since Darren Hayes released the first single from his third album (This Delicate Thing We’ve Made), ‘On The Verge Of Something Wonderful’.

It is a truly captivating song with some fantastic trademark highs in Hayes’ voice – it’s a powerful and emotive track that really stood apart from the rest of mainstream music at that time, by reigniting the 80s sound. The track (and in fact the rest of the album) was recorded with the help of a 1983 Fairlight CMI synthesizer.

It reached Number 20 in the UK charts and not only did the song have a very 80s feel to it but so did the video. The music video contains a cameo appearance by Janice Dickinson and features Darren singing in front of a series of animated backdrops – it is reminiscent of the Max Headroom TV series, certain scenes from the film Electric Dreams and the graphics of some Atari brochures from the early 80s.

Do you have some great memories of this track? Have you got a #ThrowbackThursday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#EventSpeaks: Chicane @ Concorde 2, Brighton – 19/05/17

On Friday 19th May 2017, Chicane came to Brighton to perform a full-band set (which is a very rare thing!) It was an absolutely incredible night, with support from Chris Hopkins, who did an hour and a half DJ set.

Chris Hopkins (DJ Set)

One of Nick’s friends, Chris Hopkins did a great DJ set to get the evening started, playing a range of dance anthems as well as some remixes of classic songs by Prince and others; it was non-stop tune after tune.

Highlight:

  • The dedication made to Robert Miles before playing ‘Children’ was touching and had the crowd cheering and dancing along.
  • Also playing a Chicane song (not on the set list), right before he took to the stage, was a great way to get the crowd going.

Chicane

Chicane took to the stage with the recent, ambient, ascending track ’38 Weeks’, accompanied by his band (Karlos Edwards on drums and Simon Small on guitar and bass) and singer, Rosalee O’Connell. The set was then packed with his biggest hits from the past 20 years, in celebration of his recent album, Twenty. I particularly enjoyed the live performances of ‘Poppiholla (Anniversary Remix)’, ‘Fibreglasses’‘Don’t Give Up’‘Nite On Shore’ and ‘Saltwater’.

The set was diverse, mixing his more upbeat, club anthems (which had the audience going wild; jumping up and down and singing along) and the more mellow, ambient tracks; at times joined by either of the two singers (Rosalee O’Connell or Gavin Conder) accompanying and others with just the musicians; it all flowed perfectly.

It was great to hear these tracks live and the combination of Nick’s synth tracks and keys alongside live instrumentation was a really unique way to experience his music.

The performance was about an hour and a half long and people loved every second of it (myself included); we could quite happily have gone on listening, watching and dancing all night. There was genuine disappointment when it came an end but an encore led to rapturous applause before closing the show with ‘Stoned In Love’, with Gavin Condor on vocals.

If you haven’t ever seen him play with a full band, you must! I’m already itching to catch him live again!!!

Highlights:

  • The set list was crammed full of hit after hit.
  • Nick mixed the sounds to perfection and whilst the quality sounded like the studio versions, the subtle changes to the track made them unique to that performance.
  • The bass sounds were so heavy and loud, you could feel them reverberate through your chest.
  • The guitarist was incredibly talented, particularly on the track, ‘Nite On Shore’ when he showed off some impressive acoustic guitar skills.
  • The superbly powerful vocals of both singers were stunning to witness.
  • The drummer’s use of both drum kit and samples pads added a diverse edge to the performance.

All of these excellent photos are credited to Elliot McRae.
Go on, give him a follow – @EMcraePhoto

#Two4Tunesday: Niall Horan – ‘Slow Hands’ & HAIM – ‘Want You Back

Niall Horan – ‘Slow Hands’

Niall Horan is back with, ‘Slow Hands’, the follow-up to his 2016 debut solo single, This Town and it is awesome!

The song has a completely different sound to his debut single and his vocals on this track doesn’t sound like him in places, but this tune is catchy AF!

I love the broken vocal edits on the verses and the chorus just grips you and makes you want to belt it out loud. The guy is a true talent and this single is proof of that.

No video has been released yet, but I’m sure it won’t be long.

HAIM – ‘Want You Back

HAIM are back and gearing up to release their second album, Something To Tell You, later this year with the single ‘Want You Back’.

It’s brave to name a song after one of the biggest singles of all time but this track does well to make it’s own mark. It is a song which outlines one’s inner battle between the head and the heart with lyrics that beg for forgiveness from an ex, hoping to win them back into the empty space left in their heart.

It’s a cracking follow-up and sets good expectations for the upcoming album.

No video has emerged for this track yet either but we’ll keep you posted.

#SundayFunday: Lady Gaga – ‘The Cure’

It’s come as a complete surprise, but Lady Gaga has literally just dropped her latest single, The Cure’, today.

After performing it for the first time at this year’s Coachella (2017), the singer has also released the track via iTunes and Spotify.

It is the first new music from the singer since last year’s album, Joanne. It’s unclear, as yet, what she plans to do with the song – could it be the sign of a new album? Or is it just a present to her adoring fans? No one knows yet.

The song itself is more of a step in the direction of her earlier music (The Fame) and is a far cry from 2016’s Joanne but it certainly is catchy. However, it does feel a little safe from the singer as it’s definitely got vibes of the current Tropical House trend but she’s definitely put her mark on it – undoubtedly it’ll chart well! I do like it though – a good track.

Unfortunately no music video has been released as yet, but of course I’m sure one will follow. Until then, see the fan-recorded debut performance at 2017’s Coachella.

What are your thoughts of the singer’s latest, surprise single? Please leave your thoughts or your own #SundayFunday song suggestion in a comment or via social media.
