#TunefulTuesday: Justin Bieber – ‘Anyone’

facebook_logos_PNG19751.png    ios_homescreen_icon.png   app-icon2.png

Justin Bieber is a Canadian pop powerhouse, notable for songs such as What Do You Mean?Sorry and Where Are Ü Now.

‘Anyone’ marks the first new song since the release of his 2020 album, Changes and sees the singer take on a new, optimistic sound somewhere between 1980s and 1990s pop.

When talking about the song, Bieber said: “‘Anyone’ is such a special, hopeful, anthemic song. It sets the tone for a brighter new year full of hope and possibility.” It couldn’t have come at a better time with its release on January 1st 2021, setting the tone for a new year and new hope.

So far, the song has reached Number 4 in the UK Singles Chart.

In the music video, Bieber portrays a 1940s boxer whose love for his partner inspires him to train, fight, and eventually overcome a potential knock-out on his journey to becoming a champion boxer. He even covered up all his tattoos for the shoot. It’s well worth a watch.

#TunefulTuesday: Will Joseph Cook – ‘Hey Brother’

facebook_logos_PNG19751.png    ios_homescreen_icon.png   app-icon2.png

It’s been a couple of years now since Will Joseph Cook released his debut album, Sweet Dreamer, but the catchy indie-pop, anthem-writer is back with a brand new single… and it would appear he’s parted ways with Atlantic Records.

His latest offering, ‘Hey Brother’, comes following a witty video announcement hinting not only of this single release, but a forthcoming album too!

‘Hey Brother’ is still distinctly Will Joseph Cook – his ethereal high vocals in the choruses are married with his more apathetic tones in the verses. One thing’s for sure, his voice remains unique and captivating, as ever.

This track also demonstrates his marvellous songwriting talent, as he uses a simplistic yet catchy guitar melody and loops it, bringing it in and out of the focus, whilst also continually layering up the track to bring it to a great, harmony-driven climax.

This layering is reflected in the music video for the track too, which sees multiple versions of the singer appearing throughout. He’s not one to settle for something visually drab and so this too shows that he’s remaining true to his artistic nature, once again showing how powerful it can be when coupling music and interesting visuals. Check it out below!

#NewMusic: Angels & Airwaves – ‘Rebel Girl’

facebook_logos_PNG19751.png    ios_homescreen_icon.png   app-icon2.png

Angels & Airwaves are back!

Hands down, this is my all-time favourite band, ever and I am so pleased to see they are making a triumphant return to music!

Today (Tuesday 30th April), Tom Delonge and co, have released their first single in 3 years, ‘Rebel Girl’, marking somewhat of a return to their trademark, sci-fi meets industrial, stadium rock sound. However, there is definitely still a large amount of their more recent (The Dream Walker) influences too – probably in part due to Ilan Rubin and Aaron Rubin‘s hands in the writing. What’s more, it looks like David Kennedy and Matt Wachter are back too….though Matt doesn’t appear to be in the promo shots…curious!

“‘Rebel Girl’ is a space-age love song that combines my enduring obsession for New Wave, pop punk and anthemic rock and roll music,” says DeLonge. This would appear to be the signs of the band’s upcoming album release, and is believed to also coincide with a feature film too…it’s all very exciting!

It seems that in the 3 years since the band released their last EP, they have now signed a deal with Rise Records, also announcing their first live shows in seven years! Sadly, at the moment it would appear to be just a North American tour, but I have just about everything crossed for a mini UK tour…or even just a London date or two!

Unfortunately no music video has emerged yet, but we’ll keep you updated when one drops…in the meantime, enjoy the visual below.

All I have left to say is just, ‘Hell yeah!’ They’re back, the track is awesome and I can’t wait for the latest era of Angels & Airwaves to really take off!!!

#Two4Tunesday: James Arthur – ‘You Deserve Better’ & MNEK – ‘Colour’ featuring Hailee Steinfeld

James Arthur – ‘You Deserve Better’

James Arthur has just returned with not one, but two, new songs in the form of a double A-side single, You Deserve Better/At My Weakest.

‘You Deserve Better’ is an acoustic-driven track at the start but then goes on to see the introduction of funky bass guitars, pounding drums and rhythmic claps. The almost understated repetition of the track’s title in the pre-chorus is catchy and seems to take a hold on the listener, before James Arthur bursts into his full, powerful vocals in the chorus. It’s a brilliantly written track!

Does this signify the coming of a third album for the artist?!

No official video has been released as yet, but the paper-themed lyric video (below) should keep you going for now.

MNEK – ‘Colour’ featuring Hailee Steinfeld

To much delight from fans, MNEK recently announced that his debut album is finished and in the process of being mixed.

Earlier this year, he released the tantalising ‘Tongue’ and now he’s back with ‘Colour’ (presumably the second single from the upcoming album), which is a collaboration with singer and actress, Hailee Steinfeld.

The track comes just in time for Pride season and with the mention of rainbows 🌈 and MNEK himself being gay, we’re sure this is going to receive a lot of spins around the world, this summer.

The track is tropical house-flavoured with and almost reggae beat to it. The playful, loved-up lyrics are fun and catchy and the way the pair bounce off each other and harmonise is just perfect!

Again, no music video has been released for this track yet but the wonderfully colourful lyric video (below) should hopefully brighten up your day.

#TunefulTuesday: Jordan Mackampa – ‘One In The Same’

Jordan Mackampa is a Coventry-born, singer-songwriter who has managed to combine his Congolese roots and Midlands upbringing and is deeply inspired by his mother’s love of the great soul singers, as such, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield.

‘One In The Same’ is a combination of timelessly soulful vocals with catchy melodies, stunning harmonies and beautifully heartfelt lyrics, creating a captivating blend of folk and soul. The track was in fact co-written by Benjamin Francis Leftwich and Matt Ingram and produced by Cam Blackwood.

This is definitely the start of something magical for this artist and I look forward to hearing more from him in the months to come.

Unfortunately no music video exists for this track, as yet, but if one appears online, we’ll be sure to share it with you.

#Two4Tunesday: Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey – ‘The Middle’ & Lil Dicky – ‘Freaky Friday’ featuring Chris Brown

Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey – ‘The Middle’

Zedd‘s latest track, ‘The Middle’ features the American electronic music duo, Grey (aka brothers Kyle Trewarth and Michael Trewartha) and vocals by American country singer, Maren Morris.

This track may well have come out at the start of 2018 but 10 weeks later, it’s still at Number 10 in the UK charts, following the success of 2017’s Stay with Alessia Cara, however this track performed even better than that.

It’s a fun, uplifting track which has a very similar feel to ‘Stay’ with it’s combination of raw, powerful and digitised/vocoder vocals, atop a blend of 90s pop sensibilities and modern EDM vibes, making for a very distinctive sound.

The video is great fun too, with it’s stunning set and extravagant use of visual lighting. All-round this is just a fantastic piece of modern pop that will undoubtedly get stuck in everyone’s head; a true favourite of mine right now!

Lil Dicky – ‘Freaky Friday’ featuring Chris Brown

The second track this week is Lil Dicky‘s Number 1, smash hit, ‘Freaky Friday’, featuring guest vocals from Chris Brown.

The track itself is a combination of  hip hop, pop and comedy (think similar to The Lonely Island), centring on the film(s) of the same name and continually references Chris Brown himself, throughout.

Whilst this track is intentionally comedic and works hilariously with its accompanying music video, there’s no doubt about it that this is one heck of a catchy tune too; it’s easy to see how it’s managed to top the UK Charts!

The music video itself parodies the 2003 film Freaky Friday (starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan) and features cameos from Jimmy TatroEd SheeranDJ Khaled and Kendall Jenner. It’s a must-watch video but also, I defy anyone not to end up singing along to this earworm of a track!

#Two4Tunesday: Marshmello x Lil Peep – ‘Spotlight’ & Cadell – ‘Create A Career’

Marshmallow x Lil Peep – ‘Spotlight’

Electronic dance music producer Marshmello has released a new song titled ‘Spotlight’, featuring vocals from the recently deceased rapper and singer, Lil Peep, who passed away late last year (2017). The pair had been previously working on the track before the rapper passed.

Marshmello has previously done music collaborations with Omar LinX and Ookay, as well as remixing popular songs by Jack Ü and Zedd. His song ‘Alone’, made it onto the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 2017.

“Gus will live forever through his music and that is something we should all be extremely thankful for.” – Marshmello

This song oozes a rap-grunge vibe with Lil Peep admitting his feelings for someone, accompanied by dark chords. The use of light guitar riffs, paired with the melancholy dark vibe of the beat is a sweet juxtaposition, which is extremely satisfying to listen to. Although there is no official music video with either of the individuals in it, so to speak, the image of Peep with a flickering spotlight on him, is haunting yet also artistic. Paying homage to the rapper in this way, regarding the song’s cover art, in my opinion, is a nice gesture.

Cadell – ‘Create A Career’

Rapper Cadell, is a UK Grime MC from Bow located in East London who was born 17 January 1997. His first mixtape was released back in 2016, titled Hotline, as well as his first debut album, 3 Is The New 6. The rapper is most commonly known for being the younger brother of one of the “godfathers” of grime; Wiley.

‘Create A Career’ (which was originally titled ‘Do It’) is currently his most listened to song on his Spotify reaching over 36,000 listens, with the album it is featured on, L.O.N.D.O.N (Lots Of N****s Don’t Observe Nature), being released at the start of this year (2018).

The song opens with a slightly electronica feel to it and jumping, jittering vocals which are swiftly followed up with a deep bass line. The lyrics are used as a tool for the rapper as he expresses his thoughts and feelings about the growth of his career. The fast-paced rhythm, accompanied with the continual bass and synth backing, makes for a great blood-pumping grime tune.

Prides – ‘Let’s Stay In Bed All Day’

Prides (check out our interview here) have just dropped their latest single, ‘Let’s Stay In Bed All Day’ which is taken from the forthcoming album, A Mind Like The Tide (out next year). The album is actually being split into two parts, with Part 1 coming October 27th 2017.

The track sees the duo release a song which keeps to their trademark, synth-pop sound and it’s catchy as hell…I can’t wait for the rest of the album!

The audio video is below but no official music video has emerged yet, but we’ll keep you updated on this.

Matrix & Futurebound – ‘Light Us Up’ featuring Calum Scott

Matrix & Futurebound are an electronic duo who have just teamed up with ex-Britain’s Got Talent contestant (and incredible vocalist) Calum Scott.

The track has a summery vibe to it and Calum Scott’s passionate, ascending vocals weave their way beautifully throughout the uplifting instrumentation. It is a true anthem and begs to be sung at the top of your voice or pumped loudly through your car speakers. It’s a true feel-good track – I can’t get enough of this.

No music video has been made for this track yet either, but we’ll keep you updated on this.

#Two4Tunesday: ROAM – ‘Playing Fiction’ & Neck Deep – ‘In Bloom’

ROAM – ‘Playing Fiction’

ROAM are currently gearing up to release their second album, Great Heights & Nosedives, the first single from which, is ‘Playing Fiction’.

Alex Adam (Guitar/Vocals) explains the thinking behind the track – “Playing Fiction is really a song about pretending, and the realisation that things aren’t always how they seem. Maybe you’re pretending you’re ok, saying nothing’s wrong when it actually is, or, as is the case in Playing Fiction, you’re pretending a relationship hasn’t run its course when it has.

The video for the song centres around myself and Costello walking through a town with strange scenes appearing as the day progresses. It all builds towards our realisation that we’re stuck in a fairytale daydream, and we end up being a part of the fantastical world. It was a lot of fun to shoot with all our friends and some cheeky special extras in various costumes. We’ll let you guess as to their identities…”

This incredibly fresh pop punk band release their second record on 13th October 2017 and are on tour, supporting New Found Glory (see our interview here) around the UK, throughout September and October.

I love this track and can’t wait to hear the rest of the album!

Neck Deep – ‘In Bloom’

Neck Deep just released their latest record, The Peace And The Panic, from which the most recent single is ‘In Bloom’. The single is a real belter and is packed full of emotion. The track begins with a “news clip” about an atomic bomb having been dropped 48 hours ago – sometimes these voiceover intros can be quite cringeworthy, but this one truly sets the tone of the track beautifully.

This is a song that is everything I love about an emotive pop punk track – it’s got passionate, powerful vocals, a great rhythm to the guitar and great lyrics. This track has got me very excited to check out the rest of the album!

#Two4Tunesday: Harry Styles – ‘Sign Of The Times’ and Anton Powers & Pixie Lott – ‘Baby’ featuring Pixie Lott

Harry Styles – ‘Sign Of The Times’

Last week, Harry Styles released his first solo single since the hiatus of One Direction and it’s very different to their sound or indeed any of the boys’ solo efforts.

This track takes on a very epic sound – it’s very evocative of brit pop bands like Oasis and in other ways, even like The Beatles. It’s a song that builds to a huge climax.

Undoubtedly this will signal an album to come, but no music video has even been released yet so it’ll probably be a little way off yet. We’ll be sure to post the video when it’s released.

Anton Powers and Pixie Lott – ‘Baby’

You may remember Anton Powers for his hit, Alone No More with Philip George back in 2015. Well now he’s back and this time, he’s teamed up with British pop superstar Pixie Lott.

‘Baby’ is a collaboration between the singer and producer and it’s got all the makings of a modern-day disco track; funky string hits, EDM beats, synths, good vocals and a vocal sample chorus.

I predict that this could be a big hit in the lead up to the summer this year. It’s great to see Pixie Lott back – hopefully this signals some more music to come from her soon.

The music video has just been released and it’s very tropical, just like the track. See it below.
