#WildCardWednesday: Netta – ‘Toy’

This year’s Eurovision 2018 winner, Netta (who represented Israel 🇮🇱) has created one heck of a monster song, ‘Toy’.

The track itself is wonderfully bizarre and the type of perfect pop song you would expect to hear at Eurovision, with her odd vocal sounds and interesting instrumentation. I particularly love the references to Japanese culture and odd chicken noises…so quirky.

Some critics have claimed that the live performance of the track, at Eurovision, was cultural appropriation of Japanese imagery (due to her kimono and buns, with Maneki-nekos as stage props) however Netta herself has been quoted as being a keen follower of Japanese popular culture (particularly the Pokémon franchise). Personally, I think the Japanese would appreciate the admiration of their culture; what you make of this?

The music video is a bit of fun too; she seems like a fun and interesting character – someone you could have a good laugh with.

Whatever you make of the track, she won this year’s Eurovision; was she the right winner for you?

What are your thoughts of this rather different track? Do you think she was the right winner? Have you got a #WildCardWednesday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via our social media.

#WildCardWednesday: PAULi – ‘WAITING (Getting On This Train)’

Having seen PAULi support Rae Morris at Concorde 2 recently (review here)…I have been utterly obsessed! This is an artist who delivers a live performance which is both exciting and captivating; he has crafted something truly unique!

‘WAITING (Getting On This Train)’ is an intense blend of London’s urban music scene, with chaotic dance elements and a certain quality to his voice that is somewhat reminiscent of something Prince would have done, in his more recent years.

PAULi is an artist that has worked hard to produce a complete package; artistic music videos, quirky single/album artwork and a unique genre-blending sound. Unfortunately, no music video exists for this track but if you ever get the chance to see him live, there’s something in the energy of this song that is just astounding!

This is most definitely an artist to watch out for; I’m predicting big things for him!

#WildCardWednesday: Kris Evans – ‘Famous’

Kris Evans (previously of The Mend/Race The Horizon) has just dropped his new single, ‘Famous’…and it’s massive!

Think Dappy meets Chris Brown with a slightly more underground, urban edge but topped with a strong chorus and you’ve got this single; it’s genuinely one of the freshest songs I’ve heard recently and I can’t get enough of it!

Also, 2018 is already looking very promising for Kris, who’s been nominated for ‘Best Urban Act Of 2018’ at the Unsigned Music Awards! What’s more, Kris has further big plans ahead, which include more releases and some exciting live performances across the UK.

No music video has been released for this track yet, but if one does emerge, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.

#WildCardWednesday: YONAKA – ‘Bubblegum’

YONAKA are a fantastic Brighton-based band who consist of Theresa Jarvis (Vocals), George Edwards (Guitar), Alex Crosby (Bass/Keys) and Robert Mason (Drums). The band refer to themselves as ‘Dark Alt Pop with heavy riffs’ and I couldn’t agree more; their latest track, ‘Bubblegum’ fuses electro-pop vibes with grungy guitars and it’s all topped off with Theresa‘s vocals (which I find have similarities to Charli XCX).

The video has just been released and it really depicts just what YONAKA are all about – it’s visually intriguing and oddly artistic; what more can you expect from a Brighton-grown band eh?!

You must check out this wonderful song and accompanying video – it’s well worth it!

#WildCardWednesday: Ben Phipps – ‘Mrs Mr’ featuring Lizzy Land

Ben Phipps is a twenty-six year old music producer hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden with a unique style of production that draws influence from both deep house and mainstream pop music.

His latest single, ‘Mrs Mr’, is a collaboration with LA-based singer/songwriter Lizzy Land, whose soaring vocals work effortlessly in line with Ben Phipps’ tempting melodies and layered electronic arrangements.

No music video has been released yet but there is something in the pipeline – in place of a traditional music video, Ben Phipps aspired to produce and direct a live-action lyric film taking place in his home, and across New York City. The piece was filmed by local filmmaker, Christian Lucas, and will be released September 4.

This is definitely an artist who knows what he wants and how to achieve it – he is one to watch out for!

#WildCardWednesday: Thirty Seconds To Mars – ‘Walk On Water’

Thirty Seconds To Mars are back! Their latest single, ‘Walk On Water’, is the lead single taken from their forthcoming fifth album.

The track looks at the current state of America and serves as a cry for unity from the nation. Jared Leto himself said, “It’s a song about freedom, about persistence, about change and about fighting for what you believe in.”

It’s an interesting change to their sound but somehow still maintains that epic, stadium-filling edge to it. In parts, it is reminiscent of Adam & The Ants‘Prince Charming’ but with a modern twist – this single has got me hotly anticipating their new album.

No music video has been released, as yet, but the lyric video is stunning in its own right – all the footage used within it, was filmed on a single day (July 4th 2017) in the USA. Over 10,000 people submitted footage of a single day including 92 of our professional crews. A very small selection of that footage was used but the band will be using the rest, as part of a documentary film (directed by Jared Leto) that will be a companion piece to the band’s new album.

What are your thoughts of the band’s new direction with their latest single? Got your own #WildCardWednesday track to recommend us? Please leave your thoughts or song suggestions in a comment or via social media.

#WildCardWednesday: KYAN – ‘Burn Mona Lisa’

KYAN (Kyan Palmer) is the definition of #WildCardWednesday – he’s seemingly come out of nowhere with this incredible debut single! He originally recorded ‘Burn Mona Lisa’ as part of a thesis project but stated that he was surprised at how easily everything appeared to come together during the recording process, especially considering it was his first time recording.

“Overall, it probably took about an hour and a half to record, mix and everything,” Palmer explains. “I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect since it was my first time doing anything like that, but I really like how the song came together.”

Palmer’s relatable lyrics and silky voice make this track an impressive debut single and will undoubtedly ensure his followers continue to grow. Although it would seem that the track is in reference to a relationship ending, KYAN stated that they were intended to be somewhat ambiguous and that this was one of his favourite aspects of the song.
