#ThrowbackThursday / #ThrowbackThreesday: Missy Elliott

Missy Elliott Banner

This week’s #ThrowbackThursday post is a special #ThrowbackThreesday (like May’s Will Smith post).

I decided that I wanted to post a Missy Elliott track this week but couldn’t decide which one to choose; I was left with 3 epic tunes of hers to share so thought, why not share them all!

Back in 2001, Missy Elliott really broke into the UK mainstream, with her Top 5 hit, ‘Get Ur Freak On’ (taken from her 2001 album, ‘Miss E… So Addictive’). The track was produced by Timbaland and has a heavy bhangra influence, featuring spoken words in both Japanese and Hindi.

This track was later followed up by another Top 10 hit, in 2002, ‘Work It’ (taken from her 2002 album, ‘Under Construction’) and this song became notable for her use of backwards lyrics, an elephant sound to block out an expletive and the use of the term ‘badonkadonk’.

Also produced by Timbaland, this is a massive song by all accounts!

Finally of the three Missy Elliott tracks, is ‘Lose Control’, which was released in 2005 and the lead single from her album, ‘The Cookbook’. Missy Elliott herself produced this song and it features guest vocals from Ciara and Fatman Scoop, which really add to the song. Fatman Scoop’s shouts and Ciara’s attempts to rap, really enhance the song to perfection.

The song also features samples from Cybotron‘s ‘Clear’ and Hot Streak‘s ‘Body Work’ and produced another Top 10 hit for Missy E!

#ThrowbackThursday / #ThrowbackThreesday: Will Smith

Will Smith Banner

This week’s #ThrowbackThursday consists of the legendary Will Smith; not only is Will Smith renowned for his fantastic acting and producing but also his rapping and songwriting talents, having written some massive chart-topping tunes!

So when it came down to choosing a track I found it virtually impossible to pick just one song and therefore have decided to do another #ThrowbackThreesday (like I did previously, in memory of Lil’ Chris).

First off, is one of Will Smith’s biggest UK hits and in fact his only, solo, UK Number 1, Men In Black. The song was not only the lead song taken from 1997 film, Men In Black, but it was also Will’s first solo single. The song also features samples of Patrice Rushen‘s ‘Forget Me Nots’.

Next, in 1999, was another massive hit for Will, taken from another film, Wild Wild West. This scored him a Number 2 in the UK Charts and was yet another memorable track of his. I’m not ashamed to say that I know all of the words to this song…and yes, I feel “damn good though, if I can say it myself” when I sing along! The song features samples of Stevie Wonder‘s song, ‘I Wish’.

Later on, in 1999, Will released his final single of the year, inspired by the turning of the new millennium. The video features many celebrities including DJ Jazzy Jeff, Eve, K-Ci and more and sees Will perform in a variety of time-travelling settings. Another catchy Number 2 for the rapper/hip hop star and it features samples of The Clash‘s ‘Rock The Casbah’ and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five‘s ‘Superappin”.

Will Smith – ‘Will 2K’ featuring K-Ci

I hope you enjoy re-living these tracks as much as I am!

Do you remember these tracks? Have you got a different, Will Smith track for your #ThrowbackThursday? Please share this with your social media friends.

#MellowMonday: Foster The People – ‘Pumped Up Kicks’/Jaden Smith – ‘Pumped Up Kicks (Like Me)’

Foster the People Banner

Pumped Up Kicksis such a sensationally catchy track with an odd psychedelic, beach-like quality to it, which just captivates me. I can’t get enough of it!

It was initially recorded by Mark Foster (Foster The People) as (what he thought was) a demo, on a day when he wasn’t feeling at all inspired to write a song…and this was the product! If a song like this can be written on an uninspired day, imagine what an inspired day would sound like!

This song has also managed to inspire a whole host of other people and has been remixed, covered and parodied by the likes of Taylor Swift & Zac Efron, Kendrick Lamar and “Weird Al” Yankovic. One of my favourite versions, which I’ve also decided to include, is by Jaden Smith – I haven’t previously rated his rapping, but this particular song made me take notice of him and actually, he’s quite a talented kid – it’s got good lyricism and his rapping skills are pretty decent! A great cover/remix…er, thing!

Happy #MellowMonday to everyone and I hope you all have a good week! What track is easing you into this week?
