#Review: Zebrahead @ Patterns, Brighton – 18/01/20

On Saturday 18th January 2020, Zebrahead arrived in Brighton to perform the first of three, intimate UK shows, whilst on a break from their tour with Sum 41. The band were supported by Welsh rock band, Maddison. Here’s what we had to say about the show…

Welsh rockers, Maddison, put on one hell of a show with their heavy guitars, powerful vocals and superb production (with some pretty epic backing tracks, which truly added to the atmosphere).

Their sound is massive – it’s stadium metal meets melodic rock and their onstage chemistry radiates throughout their performance.

The only criticism is that their onstage banter sometimes became tricky to hear when they talked over each other. Other than that, despite not knowing any of their songs, I thoroughly enjoyed their set.

Highlight: It would have to be the incredible use of backing tracks to create a wonderfully full sound – a real quality production.

As always, Zebrahead arrived on stage to an epic intro – this time it was the Team America theme song – before bursting into their first song, ‘All My Friends Are Nobodies’.

Despite the venue being smaller than some they might be used to, the band used the space to their full advantage. They worked the crowd into a frenzy by performing a string of their hits – both old and new – and getting everyone in the place involved!

They certainly know how to have a good time too – the band have a pair of guitar techs who dress up as aliens and come on stage intermittently, getting involved in a variety of hilarious antics – from doing a drinking competition between the two of them, to one of them crowd-surfing on a giant rubber ring (as can be seen in the ‘Hello Tomorrow’ live video below). Possibly the most fun part of their set though, was their cover of ‘Baby Shark’ but changed to ‘Let’s Do Shots, during which the aliens passed shots around the band (see the video below).

The band members are tight – their performance is strong, well-timed and they clearly have a great relationship on stage – the chemistry between them is light-hearted and jokey and they just look like they’re having the best time.

If you haven’t had the chance to see Zebrahead live yet, then frankly you haven’t lived yet – they always deliver a high-energy show and regardless of whether you know many of their songs or not, they never fail to get the audience involved.

Zebrahead are a must-see!

  • During one song, Ali asked the crowd to see how many people they could get crowd-surfing during one song – security did not look happy, but it was manic and hilarious.
  • During ‘Worse Than This’, the band brought up two people in the crowd to try and out-drink each other, causing chaos on stage, followed by getting the pair to stage dive off the stage, after the song.
  • ‘Let’s Do Shots’ (‘Baby Shark’ cover)…enough said!
  • The aliens’ antics were pretty funny – in particular the crowd-surfing on the rubber ring.
  • Ali’s powerful scream/rapping is incredible to witness live and Matty (although sometimes not always pitch-perfect) has a great live vocal too.
  • Dan’s moustache!
  • The way the band include the audience and get a real crowd interaction going means that whether you know their material or not, you will always feel swept-up and included at one of their shows.

As you can tell from my Zebrahead gig review, I friggin’ loved¬†Patent Pending‘s live performance and as such have been listening to their album,¬†‘Brighter’, non-stop!

This pop punk band are from New York and formed in 2001 but what struck me most about them is their really varied song subjects and cheery disposition. I loved how open the singer, Joe Ragosta, was about having ADHD and battling it and the guy is a comedic genius live!

This song is monsterous for many reasons; the epic ascension throughout and the choral vocals, but then there’s the video too! It’s all-round just a sick song!

Thank me later!

Please share this on your social medias and reply with your #WildCardWednesday song of choice below or with the hashtag on Twitter and Facebook.

So, last night (Saturday 28th November 2015) I got the opportunity to see Zebrahead perform at Brooklyn Bowl in London (at the O2). The band were supported by  Man With A Mission and Patent Pending.

Man With A Mission

This bunch of dudes are a Japanese band with elements of hard rock and dance-pop (brought by their enthusiastic DJ) fused together to create some sort of dance-rock blend! It’s not just that which makes them unique…it’s their friggin’ wolf heads! Their set was good and they definitely got the crowd going.

Highlight: The eyes on their wolf-heads lit up!

These guys are a New York-based pop-punk band and my God did they make an entrance! They are possibly one of the most insanely great set of performers I’ve ever seen! The singer, Joe Ragosta, is hilarious and has a really unique personality and he explained how he has ADHD – but man, this guy uses it to its strengths, in the best possible way! Their music was good too!

Highlight:¬†When the singer and guitarist entered the crowd and had a “crowd swimming” competition! Legends!

Then there was Zebrahead; within seconds of taking to the stage, everyone was skanking-out like pros to the Californian rockers!

The band’s entrance was amazing – Gangnam Style¬†blaring out of the speakers, with a flashing, dancing Psy toy on top of one of the amps – which then rolled straight into the punchy, ‘Rescue Me’.

What never ceases to amaze me with these guys, is how when they perform live, their songs are so much faster than on the albums, yet Ali Tabatabaee‘s rapping skills¬†are impeccably timed, at such high speeds!

Working a crowd is not a problem for this group of lads as they each take turns to speak to their audience and there’s even some stage diving going on!

What I think these guys have down to an art, is not playing all their new stuff with just one or two older tracks; they introduce it amongst a string of fan-favourites, but in turn manage to make their new music instant crowd-pleasers with their high levels of energy, crowd interaction and pure damn-awesomeness!

‘Save Your Breath’, ‘Call Your Friends’, ‘Worse Than This’ and ‘Hello Tomorrow’¬†were my favourite performances of the night – they really got the crowd going and there were circle-pits galore!

I implore everyone to see this band at least once in their life, because only then will you truly know the meaning of fun!

  • The band’s Gangnam Style entrance with a flashing, dancing Psy toy!
  • Ali Tabatabaee standing on some of the crowd’s shoulders to perform!
  • Matty Lewis holding a note for an insane amount of time, whilst checking his watch!
  • Ben Osmundson‘s crowd-rousing speech about his song dedication to London!
  • Dan Palmer‘s moustache! Oh…and his sick guitar skills!
  • Ed Udhus looking so relaxed while beating the hell out of the drums

  • Rescue Me
  • Save Your Breath
  • Call Your Friends
  • Worse Than This
  • Drink Drink – a fun sea-shanty type song where a couple of their pirate friends come on and chug some beer/vodka!
  • Hello Tomorrow
  • Hell Yeah!
  • Devil On My Shoulder (with guest vocals from¬†Man With A Mission)
  • Mental Health
  • I’m Just Here For The Free Beer
  • Mike Dexter Is A God, Mike Dexter Is A Role Model, Mike Dexter Is An A**Hole
  • Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right, But Three Rights Make A Left
  • Who Brings A Knife To A Gunfight?
  • Sirens

  • Anthem

Lastly, I want to say a massive thanks to the band for putting me on the guest-list, so I could come and do this review!

#WildCardWednesday: Zebrahead – ‘Save Your Breath’

You probably remember the interview we did with Ali Tabatabaee¬†from rap-punk band¬†Zebrahead, earlier this year; well they’re back with a new single and album, due out soon!

‘Save Your Breath’ is their latest single, with the lyric video¬†having been posted on YouTube and the album (Walk The Plank) is due out on October 13th 2015.

This song is just perfectly angsty with a pinch of rage and makes for a great first release from the album. It’s my Wild-Card as I know this type of music may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but this band are sensational and were a pleasure to work with when interviewing.

We are hoping to try and review one of their gigs later in the year, but will keep you posted on that! Hopefully a video for this song will follow soon ūüôā

What do you think of Zebrahead’s latest release? Are you looking forward to their new album ‘Walk The Plank’? Got any similar music you can share with us? Please leave a comment below or contact us via Facebook or Twitter.

‘Save Your Breath’¬†is available to download from iTunes right now –¬†https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/save-your-breath/id1035987049?i=1035987426

#MuzikSpeaks: An Interview with Frankmusik (2015)

*** Read our latest interview with Frankmusik (2017) – here! ***

I can’t believe that only 4 months in, we’ve already done our second interview and this one is with none other than the incredibly talented¬†Frankmusik! Vincent Turner (aka Frankmusik) came onto the scene back in 2009 with the release of his debut album,¬†‘Complete Me’ and has since gone it alone, releasing a further 3 albums!

Since his last release,¬†‘By Nicole’, in 2014,¬†Frankmusik¬†has been working on the release of a follow-up album. I have had the immense privilege of hearing 4 demos for this upcoming album and I can tell you that there are some real corkers there already! It’s a definite return to his former¬†‘Complete Me’ days but with a new air of maturity about it. I’m very excited about this upcoming release,¬†‘Not Right Now’.

Vincent was a real pleasure to chat to; he’s often known for his honesty with fans (in his updates) and his sense of humour and honesty came through perfectly, in person, during our interview.

Continuing from the tradition set in our Zebrahead interview, we asked Frankmusik to take part in a game of¬†‘Would You Rather…?’¬†with 3 different levels;¬†#WYRtame, #WYRawkward¬†and¬†#WYRwtf.

I really hope you’ll enjoy this interview as much as I did filming it and please, please share this video on your social media accounts!

I’m so stoked to bring you guys not only our first ever interview, but an interview with the incredible rapper, Ali Tabatabaee from US rapcore/pop punk/punk rock/alternative rock (let’s just put them under ‘awesome‘) band, Zebrahead! Ali was such a legend and truly is a top bloke!

I’ve tried to make it a bit different to usual interviews and included a game of¬†‘Would You Rather…?’ with 3 different levels;¬†Tame, Awkward and¬†WTF?!

Please share this video and I really hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did filming it!
